Just out of curiosity, do oil/grease your projectors yourself? If so, how often do you do this?

I've been going through some of my many machines recently,I was using another one I haven't used in a long time tonight,I normally take the back off and check everything and lube if it needs it and make a note when it was done,Mark
i would assume it all depends on how much use they get?

I guess so Tom,Dug out my Sankyo 800 machine tonight and it's had very little use, runs like a Swiss watch and nice steady image,my other Sankyo 800 has had more use(not by me) and you can listen to it and it sounds well used,I'll check it next for cleaning and lube etc,Mark
Tom,
Not as often as I should. Maybe once a year. This is a good reminder for me to setup a schedule on the calendar to do so once every 3 months.
I am interested to see what others suggest as a schedule.

Hi guys,
As an avid buyer and viewer of 8mm and 16mm - I use both gauges regularly - however can someone advise me on what lube or oil to use and where exactly to use it - i use a bell and howell TQ1 655 for 16mm and a variety of 8mm projectors - Elmo 1200hd, Eumig 824 and Fumeo 9119.
Thanks

Firstly, the instruction manual with my Eumig 810D says nothing about lubrication, that I recall, so it's never been done. The later B&H models like the TQ1 are not supposed to need lubrication according tp the instruction manual. I did give a bit of lube when I had a problem and wasn't sure what the cause was. The very old B&H models like 601, 621, and probably 631 with a wooden blimp needed lubrication regularly. The used to supply an oil container with the projector, and the manual shows the lubrication points. I did this regularly every few weeks. I think the manual may tell you how many hours between lubrications.

Probably too often in my case. Robert is right about not oiling projectors unless directed in the manual.
If there in an inverted nipple with a red dot then this should be fed with a drop of oil as with the Siemens and Fumeos. There is sometimes a felt wick that descends to the mechanism and cam that provides necessary lubrication.
I sometimes overdo this and have had splash back drops on the hot lamp dichroic reflector which blackens the silver and has to be removed with spit and an orange stick.

I try to do a pretty good dis-assemble to clean and lube each projector during the winter months - like others have said, I should keep better track!

If anybody lube an Elmo ST-1200 and videos it, explaining what to use where, I would love to see the video

I agree that it probably depends upon how often the projector is used. I always clean and lube machines when they first arrive.

I use my projectors almost every weekend. About twice a year I grease the gears up and spray the internals with a light machine oil. After 20+ years everything is running well. I'd say it is how much you use it.
