Derann ad reel 14.

#1 by Tom Photiou , Sat Sep 03, 2022 11:38 am

Another winner from Derann back in the day, Ad reel 14, 200ft colour sound, low fade stock.

This is another full 200ft spool of classic cinema ads,
This reel opens with the Canon cinemas logo, the first as is a colourful music filled animated advert for Kellogg's Coco pops, followed by ads for 501 jeans, WH Smiths, 7up, popcorn , Pepsi, Heineken Lager (the Christmas one, also on ad reel 9), Holsten Pils Lager which is the High Noon spoof, (also on ad reel 9), Castella classic cigars with Ronnie Barker. The next ad is for Dr Pepper with a take on the original Star Wars cantina scene. The final advert is for Libby's Um bongo mixed fruit drink. No doubt that this particular ad will not see the light of day again, a very colourful musical cartoon ad. The reel closes with the Canon cinemas logo.
Another reel with first class print sound and colour.

I've only got this reel as partially complete. Mine looks like this:

Reel 42 Derann Cinema Ads #14 (Partial)

1. Cannon Cinemas Opening
2. Coco Pops
3. Levi's Jeans
4. WHSmith
5. SPLICE
6. Newspaper Conglomerate
7. SPLICE
8. Castella Classic
9. SPLICE
10. Um Bongo
11. Cannon Cinemas Closing

I'm still on a quest to be a Derann ads completist!

Me too Martin, the problem is the prices they command on fleabay now are just insane, have to look out for those elusive bargains, but they do come up fairly often.
Is 30 the last one or 29? I'm sure i missed out on a number 30 but cant quite remember.

Sorry, not sure about 29 or 30. I will need to look at the late 80s catalogs when Derann had the best selection.

I'm collecting all the interstitials and daysets too. Derann produced some really cool preshow stuff, including all those fantastic cinema shorts in scope, for example.

It's funny to think that nowadays we want these reels. Back in early 80s onward, i would sit in the cinema and think, "how many more bleeding adverts do i have to sit though before the film starts". Now i look back on them with great fondness, and as already said, a lot of these ad are mini works of art. The music is often classic pop from the 60s and of course they are generally, not PC as all of todays are. These reels released mainly by Derann, but also by Indi 8, DCR, CHC and others are great openers to our shows, or as in my case, three or four make a very entertaining evening viewing with a couple of trailers in between.
Stuart, i do believe i won this particular reel, (14), from you on ebay

I'm finding it very hard to find unbutchered versions of the daysets as they were meant to be chopped up I suppose. I've bought quite a few in the past which on closer inspection have half of them missing. Same with the ad reels, some collectors cut out their favourites to make a 'best of' or cut out the ones they didn't like. But then I guess at the time none of us knew how valuable and collectable these things would get. It's the same as all the YouTubers posting old TV ads and continuity, a way of transporting the mind back to a different age.
