Step back/ Blackpool 1993

#1 by Tom Photiou , Sat Jan 08, 2022 12:06 pm

Because i was viewing the Blackpool videos form 2021, this item came up on the right hand side so i gave it a viewing.
I have already seen several of these but it is both interesting and sad to how our hobby has naturally shrunk over the years, having said that, although 1993 doesn't sound so far back, it is 29 years ago.
An excellent look back to the past though, just look at all those stalls and all the items up for grabs.

That was fun to see! Some times I think it is good for me not to have experienced Derann and these former events as I am not getting sad thinking how things were back then. But on theother hand, maybe we should just be happy that films actually still are around and not totally gone? Who could be sure the Blackpool event would still be around in 2021 back then?

Defiantly Eivind, i think many of us are amazed that the hobby is as active as it is. Obviously we are all happy to see it and hope it continues.
I never expected to see new releases in 2021 like we have, and with many more due out this year. Unfortunatly, they are too expensive to simply keep buying for the sake of having a new film, and i see that Kodak are putting up the price of raw film stock by 20%. That is a huge increase on something costing around £250 for a 600 footer. so its bound to have an impact.

I saw you Barry! If you look quickly at the Derann stand, there was a pile of copies of Hammer's The Curse of Frankenstein. Less than £200 new if I remember correctly. I suspect they would sell for rather more than that today...

Some of the hammer films that hold their colours do go for insane money, unfortunately, a lot of them have faded now, Dave Bakers new releases could do very well as long as the hike in raw material doesn't hit too soon.

I do think it will help with sales for Dave's titles once the backlog of existing orders is caught up. It is quite possible that people may delay a new order for a new title until existing orders are delivered.

i would have thought so Greg, i know the long delay for delivering some orders isn't Dave or Steve's fault but it would make some people hold off parting with more cash. I know when i ordered JP the sound stripping machine in Italy broke down just as my mute copy had been delivered for striping , so i had to wait around 5 months for mine. It was worth the wait but you do get anxious with parting with that sum of cash as the months tick by, i was kept informed all the way through though.
As i understand it, Andec have more or less caught up and things are moving along now with backorders going through. Steve did also say it was his busiest year for many years so it looks as though people are buying which, given the last 18 months with the pandemic and worries of job losses, it pretty good to say the least.

Regarding Blackpool, theres quite a few of these items on youtube, they are good to see and also reminds of of how our hobby has dwindled in numbers over the years.
/i would still like to see an Ealing convention return when things get back to normal, but i think as time goes by it looks more unlikely.
