RE: What are your most recent film purchases?

I waited to have a home theatre constructed until I felt that picture and sound quality technology had progressed to the point that I could justify the expense of building a home theatre that I had always wanted, dating back to when I first got into the hobby in 1971. I sincerely believe these are the best times to be a home showman, and I would’ve never imagined the access to stunning picture and sound quality, and access to countless titles, that today’s technology affords.

For all of these and other reasons, this is why my film purchases are now only black and white prints. In terms of pruning my “color” prints, I’m not trashing them but giving them away to my collector friends.

That's very good John, because someone will derive pleasure from the prints that don't suit you any longer.

Looks like Phil/CHC got hold of a top-notch film collection recently, because the 2 Disney prints I was lucky to snag from his recent list were in very good to excellent condition (ONCE UPON A MOUSE and MICKEY'S SERVICE STATION). Only very slight signs of wear, full original leaders, great sound, original boxes, can't ask for anything more at the price point they were selling at. Wouldn't be surprised if the other new Disney shorts on the list have all been snapped up by now.

Everything I have bought from Phil has had the original leaders, that's something you don't often get from some other sellers.

It's not always the case Robert, I have received many a feature from Phil in old battered and broken plastic cases etc.
He ships as he receives them, simple as that from Phil's used lists.

He will however always attempt to supply on whatever you wish if the films arrive with him on big reels.
He will give you the film as he has received it on 1200ft spools if you prefer it that way or split down to 600 ft spools if you prefer.
Leads and tails he will re splice if they are still on the ends of the 1200foot reels to begin with.
Otherwise you are left with whatever leaders he has to hand.

I've just been lucky Andrew, as everything from features to shorts had original leaders, not taken from other films.

You've been very lucky then Robert. Of course it is completely out of Phil's hands how he receives prints regarding spooling / original leaders etc etc.

The Professionals is more popular now than they were when originally broadcast. The reason being, that it followed closely after Upstairs Downstairs, and viewers couldn't accept Gordon Jackson as the tough head of department, after playing the butler in the previous series. Looked at now, he plays the role very convincingly, which says a lot about his acting ability.

It's a funny one this, i use to watch it on ITV first time around, i never gave it a thought until the repeaats on ITV4 Sunday mornings, i soon realised that these were edited for this early viewing and also the quality of the broadcast was awful, very green and very grainy. I saw D Guests one on ebay, (wish i bid on it) made and enquiry and told me he had a few all with A1 print. The first one i bought, reviewed on here, really was outstanding so i bought one more.
With the 4 minders, two professional and a Sweeney, (in two minds what to do with this one, see review on here and tell me what you think), i have built up a little bit of a classic 70s/80s telly series.

It's all good stuff though Tom, to be fair.

The Sweeney, The Professionals, The Persuaders,.. all were great TV series from the 70s.
Minder, another top series from a little later on.
Get as many as you can mate while ever you can find them in top nick.

I will if the prices are right, have to say, that the LPP prints from the 80s on both Professionals and Minder are unbelievably mind blowing, especially when you put up the Eastman ones after, fortunately all the Minders have good colour but the one Sweeney i got hold of does has a disappointing amount of fade. Had i have know it i would have avoided. I did use one the filters that Hugh kindly sent me a couple of years ago and this makes a fair amount of difference but once fade is in there it can only get worse. Still a great episode though.

Watching the Professionals today, plus a few others on ITV 4, I have noticed that some of the prints are quite scratched; so they have sold off their excess copies, and not necessarily left the best copy for themselves. I noticed one recent had some strange colour in some scenes, a bit green I think. You have done well to get top flight copies from David.

You'll be able to pass it on easy enough Tom if you decide it's not for you.
Popular titles will always find willing homes.

Nothing lost and you get to view it first.

I've also just had this, mint with perfect colour too, well pleased. Never the sharpest prints though which is a shame.

Our print of this is very good in colour, as already said though, while its a good print this one isnt rhe sharpest. A shame this was only a 400.

Tom,

There was a planned 3x400' edition (I've actually seen the artwork), but "Raiders" came too late for Marketing Films International, as they owed a lot of money etc. and closed within a few months of the 400' "Raiders" release, although the parent German company continued for quite a bit longer releasing German only 8mm films.

Hello Everyone sorry for the delay in getting back, the colours are very good and I will make some screen shots on here and the box is like new their are no marks on it at all I am so please and really want to thank Barry.
Its such a shame that the collectors never got to get hold of the 3 x 400ft version of Raiders it would have been such a great seller but you have to blame Marketing International for messing Paramount about.
I got my original copy of Raiders back in 1982 or 1983 of Derann at the Blackpool convention at the Gables Hotel in Blackpool, their stand was piled high with them.
