RE: What are your most recent film purchases?

Hi Robert,

You asked if the "Gunga Din" film was the full length version. Unfortunately, it is not as I just screened it tonight--even though it was described as such!
Total run time is about 90 minutes--so this must be an abridged/edited version as I believe the full length version is 117 minutes. Since I thought I was buying the full feature I will need to return this one. I am not certain who released this edit---it simply has the RKO Radio Pictures opening but I did not see any other identifying marks.
It is in nice condition, but has a slightly soft focus and the sound is not as clear as I would like either.

it can be a bit a watch out this.
Often the longest length available for a film on 8 can be or is loosely described as feature length without necessarily using the word abridged.
This would particularly apply to people selling such items on behalf of somebody else who may not know any different.

Unless we are buying from trusted honest people in the know who collect themselves, I suppose it is always favourite to do a little homework before buying a film just to assure yourself that you know exactly what it is that you are buying plus the likely quality of the print, likely fade or no fade / full length or abridged, distributor of the film etc etc.

My latest super 8 purchases are Goldfinger 4 x 600' (near 16mm print), Goldeneye 300' (opening sequence), Living Daylights 300' (opening sequence), The World Of James Bond 400' and You Only Live Twice trl (Derann trailer), there are also some sentimental ties with these films, I will cherish them.

Some of the very very best you have there Del. Very well done to you and I know these will always occupy a very special place on your shelves and in your heart.

That's a shame Greg; the full length as you say is 117 minutes, and a reissue is mentioned at 96 minutes. Back in the 70s I bought a lot of features that I thought were complete, because nothing to the contrary was said. Sometimes they would only cut 2 or 3 minutes that could have been accommodated on the spool.

But isn't it great Tom, when you finally lace up your newly acquired print - shut off the lights and see it up on the screen. I will have to start viewing rather than buying as at present I appear to be stockpiling prints - I still have around 7 or 8 16mm features to watch and I haven't seen my print of Texas Chainsaw Massacre yet that I got from Blackpool !!!

It's only in this past year that I have ever owned a print even for just a few days without then viewing it.
It's true to say the older we get the less actual time I for one at least, seem to get to having sufficient spare time to do all of the things I most enjoy doing.

Every hour of every day spent away from work recently always seems to place extraordinary demands on myself that a few years previously, simply didn't exist.

I hope retirement in a decade or so brings a little more actual leisure time.

i know what you mean there Andrew, im still in the same boat as i was before Christmas, my problem is , like David, ive bought this year when i said i wouldn't. ive bought three minders and a Sweeney that i never expected to come my way and the jagged edge feature and still have super s to view as well that i got or Christmas. Now i do need to to stop buying and get viewing properly.
its a nice feeling to have new stuff to view but now i need to be sensible.

You are lucky, my friends. As I work in Norway and have my home in Sweden 440 miles away, it seems that I never have time to go thru my collection. I have over 100 features to screen, for the first time ( 35mm, 16mm and some 8mm ) + loads of shorts. I´m really looking forward to retirement within 3 - 4 years.

me too for a period now Tom. 6 months spent catching up and merely enjoying more what we have already amassed, but then there is always another must have on the horizon!

I just wanted to share with you all, I am in the process of buying a 16mm projector TQ111 with a zoom lens, the guy made me an offer I just couldn't refuse, I know I'm going to regret this as it will all now start again. It comes with the feature The Lady Vanishes with Cybill Shepherd, a guilty pleasure of mine but the colours good.

Thanks Mark & Tom, I'm assured it's a good one, the lens alone is worth more than I am paying for the lot, he drew me in . I too also have the scope 8mm print Mark, great colour print it is too.

Attempting to cram in as much as possible this evening now by viewing as many as I possibly can into the small hours of this evening of all of my latest acquisitions.

More on all of these later at some point in the future.

See if you can spot my schoolboy error among these photographs!

I think it may well be on LPP colour stock Clyde but my schoolboy error was to instinctively copy and paste this banner from another jacket without of course giving thought to the fact it is indeed a b/w film! Doh!!

Oh well a jacket is easily replaced I suppose.
