The Godfather 3 x400ft (on 1 x 800ft), Marketing

One the greatest films made of all time. This was one of the first batch of Marketing super 8 films to be released so there was a version for everyone, the 200ft, 400ft, 3 x400ft and the full feature for those who wanted it which was 10 x 400ft. Sadly there wont be a full feature marketing print anywhere with decent colours as most, if not all are now red thanks to the company printing full feature on crappy fast fading stocks. The editing on many marketing films often left a lot to be desired and this one isn't particularly well done however, because most film goers will by now have seen the film, this 3 x 400ft version makes a reasonable cutdown of the storyline, the biggest criticism aside certain cuts, is the total lack of any kind of end title, (like most of the marketing films), after the door closes the image fades out to black & thats it. One more 400ft part would have made this a very good abridged edit.
The quality of the print is good, if anything, it is ever so slightly soft which was unusual for Marketing as the quality of there releases was one of the best at the time, most of you will recall the second batch of releases from this company were even better with crisp clear images on every title.
The colour has some fade on part one while two and three are very good with little or no fade worth mentioning, therefore part one lets this print down a little but by the time your into the second reel it is soon forgotten. The sound as always on Marketing prints is very good throughout.
Many of the main sequences are in here but here is the plot, with the help of wiki, edited to this 3 x 40ft version,

Vito sends his consigliere, Tom Hagen, to persuade studio president Jack Woltz to offer Johnny the part. Woltz refuses Hagen's request at first, but soon complies after finding the severed head of his prized racing horse in his bed.
In this version, we do not see any of the scenes where Woltz complies after the horses head scene, it is mentioned in a later scene that Woltz got the part.
As Christmas approaches, drug baron Sollozzo asks Vito to invest in his narcotics business and for police protection. Vito declines, citing that involvement in narcotics would alienate his political connections. Enforcers gun down Vito in the street.
Vito survives the shooting and is visited in the hospital by Michael, who finds him unprotected after NYPD officers on Sollozzo's payroll cleared out Vito's guards. Michael is beaten by corrupt police captain Mark McCluskey. Sollozzo and McCluskey request to meet with Michael and settle the dispute. Michael feigns interest and agrees to meet, but hatches a plan with Sonny and Corleone capo Clemenza to kill them and go into hiding. Michael meets Sollozzo and McCluskey at a Bronx restaurant he shoots both men dead.
This part of the film is another one of the poor edits, we see Michael get up to use the loo and is frisked, we see him in the bathroom and then leave it but they cut out the part where he retrieves the planted gun.
Michael takes refuge in Sicily and Fredo, Vito's second son, is sheltered by Moe Greene in Las Vegas. Carlo physically abuses his Wife Connie, Sonny speeds to their home but is ambushed and murdered by gangsters at a highway toll booth.
Devastated by Sonny's death and tired of war, Vito sets a meeting with the Five Families. He assures them that he will withdraw his opposition to their narcotics business and forgo avenging Sonny's murder. His safety guaranteed.
With his father nearing the end of his life and Fredo not suited to lead, Michael assumes the position of head of the Corleone family. Vito reveals to Michael that it was Don Barzini who ordered the hit on Sonny and warns him that Barzini would try to kill him at a meeting organized by a traitorous Corleone capo.
Michael travels to Las Vegas to buy out Greene's stake in the family's casinos and is dismayed to see that Fredo is more loyal to Greene than to his own family.
In 1955, (the time pass not explained in this version, it’s just another scene), Vito dies of a heart attack while playing with Michael's son Anthony. At Vito's funeral, Tessio asks Michael to meet with Barzini, signalling his betrayal. The meeting is set for the same day as the baptism of Connie's baby. While Michael stands at the altar as the child's godfather, Corleone hitmen murder the dons of the Five Families, plus Greene, and Tessio is executed for his treachery. In this version he is led to the car but the execution is not shown.
Michael extracts Carlo's confession to playing a part in Sonny's murder. He assures Carlo that he is being exiled, not murdered. On what Carlo thinks is his trip to the airport, Clemenza garrotes him. Connie confronts Michael about Carlo's death while Kay is in the room. When Kay asks Michael if Connie is telling the truth, she is relieved when he denies it. As she leaves, capos enters the office and pays reverence to Michael as "Don Corleone". The film's final image is to show Kay looking at the closing door.
