congratulation to Maurice who celebrates 70 Years since starting work as a Cinema Projectionist at the Odeon Cinema, Bristol.
And still projecting today with a collection of projectors that has to be one of the biggest in the country, how do you keep it all going?

Thank you, Tom,

Actually it's longer than 70 years. I had my first 9.5mm projector at Christmas 1946 making it 76 years of projecting films.
I keep going as it's my hobby. Sitting by a movie projector is just one of the greatest things in life for me.

This is one of my favourites from my cinema days. A most beautiful thing.

Machines built to last Maurice.

Like you, i like to sit next to the projector when viewing. I have never had a separate projection room even though the house i am in now is set up perfect to do so, i just like being with the audience enjoying the film while having what must be, one of the best ever inventions whirring away beside me.

We were using these projectors at the Odeon Taunton, an ex Gaumont, hence the Gaumont Kalee projectors.
It opened in 1932,it closed in 1981 to become Rank Bingo. It is still there as Mecca Bingo.

Yes, indeed.
After the Odeon closed, a new Odeon was built on the town's outskirts.
I then worked there with its five screens and Christie platters. It is now an 8 screen.

Maurice,

It is an amazing accomplishment, and a testament to your dedication to the profession and hobby. After seeing so many films over the years, are you able to name some of your overall favorites, like top five or ten?

Greg
As you can imagine, I have projected hundreds of films in cinemas and at home over the years. Here are two films, one of which holds special pride in my collection.

1) 35mm Cinema. Many years ago = "The Greatest Show On Earth".
2) 16mm Home. Technicolor and 'Scope = "West Side Story".

On 16mm, I also have "Mary Poppins", "The Sound Of Music", "Modern Times", "Mr Hulot's Holiday". All great films.

Maurice,

Great titles there!
I recently watched "Modern Times" thru streaming, having never seen it before. So far, it is the best Chaplin film I have seen. Chaplin was truly gifted, and I think that film showed more of his overall skills than some of his shorts did. I liked Paulette Goddard in her role too, a beautiful lady.
I will look to add a film print of this title to the collection in the months ahead.

If you haven't seen "Modern Times" (1936) have a look at this sequence:-
