Bandsaw print sold for over 400 quid.

#1 by Tom Photiou , Sat Oct 24, 2020 11:05 pm

I see someone paid over 400 for a 16mm copy of the 2003 version of the hulk.
As much as it would be a great modern title to own im not sure if a splice at every turn of the spool would be all that good for the projector, no matter how good the splices are.
Great result for the seller though.

Interesting....I have a 650 foot reel of the same film HULK that was bandsaw. I don’t even remember where I got it from...I think eBay many years ago. It is just a portion of the film. I think I played it once but it was kinda distracting.

Tom,

I sure would be interested in learning what running a bandsaw print would be like...perhaps extra noisy as the splices 'slap' a bit through the gate? With a splice every turn of the reel would the splices be noticeable and distracting? Of course, if there were jump splices then it would be an obvious issue...And, can you imagine having to splice the entire feature back together again?

Someone sure took some time and trouble to splice it all back together, three reels!! Mind you, £400 later, why not! It's been saved from the bin.
To be fair, i suspect the splices are pretty much perfect, but when a splice goes through the projector you have that extra bit of thickness through the gate, so the pressure plate is working a lot of overtime as well as the side pressure springs.
There was an article on here some time back regarding these prints, perhaps someone could let us know if they have any of these prints and tell us how well they project.
My own personal thoughts are, i wouldn't want one. Our projectors are of an age now where they need more looking after, prints of this calibre wont help in that department.

wow, I wouldn't have liked to have spliced back together that lot, not even for £400.00, I bet he started splicing it in 2003 and has only just finished in time to list it

Bill, are the splices used cement or tape? I can imagine it would be very distracting. As Del said, the time taken to put it back together, i think i'd rather settle for the blu ray or 4K disc.

They are tape. I will pull it out and look at it again. I remember watching it in my old Bell & Howell and it ran ok.... I mostly use an Eiki slot load now and it doesn’t like splices as well as the other projector. I’ll take a few pics of it too.

It's only an estimate, but I suggest about 600 joins per 1600' spool.
Total?
1800 joins.
WOW

Blimy Maurice, and the Hulk had three reels,
Must have cost 400 in tape. I guess thats what you call dedication, personally, I'd leave it in the bin.

Bill, as you say, the only downer about the eiki's is the use of a two claw system instead of the three claws that other machines use. I remember my old B & H years ago, it would pretty much show anything i put through it. While my Eiki's are great, splices must be done with care, (as they should be anyway) otherwise they will lose a loop, or in the case of the SLT, shut down. Fortunately it only happened once & that was a film i didn't check properly.
