Scuttle's Keep Fit Brigade...

#1 by Greg Perry , Sat May 09, 2020 5:07 pm

Last night I was in the mood for some classic comedy--the kind they no longer make: Benny Hill....
This was a three-parter from Walton Films and it still has very nice color. My prints aren't perfect, with some sporadic black lines, and I also noticed these were in need for a cleaning....

I don't know what others think but for me this is harmless fun. I can imagine in today's world, people would be squawking about Benny Hill and his mistreatment of women, short old bald men (Jackie Wright at 4' 11" tall), and anything else to make a fuss over something they don't happen to agree with....

As for me, I think Benny Hill is great fun and I think Benny makes fun of himself in the bits more often than not...

Here are some pics to enjoy...

Very nice Greg; my wife enjoys Benny Hill. we only have him on DVD. I believe some of his B&W material was put on film, but don't know who released it. I don't think most women were offended. The big boss at the TV studio at that time was John Howard Davies, a former boy actor, who called Benny Hill into his office and told him he was no longer needed. One of his shows won the Golden Rose of Montreux Award. He made a couple of shows in America, then spent the rest of his life in his flat writing scripts for shows that would never be produced.
He was frequently visited by former Hills Angels, Sue Upton, who looked after him; he became a sort of adopted member of her family. He was a comic genius.

Great choice of comedy Greg, love Benny Hill, the PC brigade put an end to his great visual comedy. The man was world famous and ITV were disgraceful the way they ended his contracts after all the millions he made them over the years. He was called into the office for what he thought was another contract, he was pretty much sacked on the spot.
As it happens, i was watching a documentary programme about Mary Millington called Respectable - The Mary Millington story, she was Britain's first big porn star, (she had, like many of them, quite a sad life), She wanted to be one of Benny Hills girls but because of the industry she was in he said he could never have her on his show as much as he wanted to. None of the girls in any of his shows were ever in sex films or page three girls. He insisted on it.
It puts paid to all the cranks who said he belittled women, including the do gooder Ben Elton. I hated seeing him being put down by Elton in one of his stand up shows. Cheap toilet humour from a so called alternative comedian,Benny Hill's comedy was appreciated the world over and he was a real nice guy in real life. Like my Wife say's, the girls all got paid, and none of them were forced to be in his shows & as Robert said, many of them became life long friends of his with Sue Upton looking after him in his later life.

Those three Walton reels are a great show starter for any comedy, we are pleased to also have these in our collection.

They told him his humour was outdated, not acceptable anymore, but they are happy to make money from the DVDs. I don't really know what alternative comedy means. The late Bob Monkhouse was asked about that; he said 'Comedy is supposed to be funny, what's the alternative?'

It was just the stupid name they gave to the new comedians who used the f word every other word and did toilet humour. And the funny thing is eveyone thought it was ok yet if during the 70s comedy the f word was mentioned once it would have made the news. Weird how times change. Jokes are no longer jokes, everyones offended.
Benny Hills comedy made kids laugh because it was visual, even if they didnt get the joke.

Thanks for the nice comments...I had heard what a bastard Davies was in the manner of him ending Benny Hill's run. And ITV made a fortune off Benny's shows over the years, and yet Mr. Hill was then tossed out like yesterday's newspaper....I have the complete set of "The Benny Hill Show" on shiny disc, but I am more happy to have these on film--sure wish there were additional ones...

You know, it is hard to take pics of these skits, because often times they would 'speed' up the chase scenes to make them even funnier....that and the exagerrated sound effects--like when Hill is slapping Jackie on the bald head all the time, always makes me laugh....

Wenn Sie hier auf Links zu eBay klicken und einen Kauf tätigen, kann dies dazu führen, dass diese Website eine Provision erhält.

There are some B&W episodes on Ebay, but they are silent; perhaps they did them in sound as well. All Walton prints.

It's a pity Walton didn't release any more reels, these were from a cinema released movie The best of Benny hill. I remember seeing this in the ABC here in Plymouth with my Brother.
The Best of Benny Hill was released in cinemas in 1974 and was simply a film version of material from the television comedy series. This movie features sketches from the early Thames Television years from 1969–1973. All of the sketches in the film are from the episodes produced and directed by John Robins.

I think these Walton reels are great too, the comedy is of the period but isn't the hobby too, I spoke to my Mum yesterday and we said the same thing, my Gran loved the Black and White minstrels, offends some these days but they aren't made today. Love Thy Neighbour in the UK was a popular show but not PC now, it was at the time though. I recently watched The Dam Busters and a black labrador has a non PC name, my Dad as a boy had the same dog with the same name, were in a world of non gender people which I find more concerning than an overweight man chasing young women in bikinis, Mark

Spot on Mark.
We have the dvds of love thy neighbour and it aint half hot mum.
Brilliant stuff, and still very funny.
Even my Mrs says todays generation is well messed up. Half of them dont know if there male female or something else. As for the parents(usually rich weirdos) who say they will let the kid decide later, well. Nuff said

Thank goodness we still have these programmes, movies and our reels to stay sane and keep laughing.

Maurice,

That youtube video is a really good example of the brilliant comedy skills of Benny Hill....I was fortunate to be able to watch his shows on KTCA-TV. KTCA was a public television station here in Minnesota which broadcast a small selection of BBC and ITV shows in the late 1970's/early 1980's.

Last time I watched 'The Dambusters' on TV, the dog's name had been edited out. Fortunately, they have not interfered with the DVD, at least not the copy I have. Used to watch 'The Black & White Minstrels' every week, it was one of the BBC's most popular shows in the 60s.

At least there out there. I suppose as the shows were generally from the 70s the stocks would all be fading by now. Shame, as much as film collectors arnt big DVD fans, these shows are well preserved on that format.
The three Walton films do come up quite often on the few dealers lists still and thankfully Walton used good stocks so from what ive seen most of them still have great colours.

Tom,

That is a great box cover...It makes sense to put all three parts on one 600 foot reel--after all who is only going to watch one part and not all three!
Would you mind if I borrowed that box cover image and printed it off to use myself?

Of course you can Greg, i have uploaded this one as a full size upload. Let me know if you would like me to send it directly to you.
I would upload it for the database but as it's my own home made one it isn't,(obviously) an original box.

If we list non original art work at the moment it is only because I haven't caught that it is non original. We intend to only show original art work. We have discussed the possibility of adding fan art as well, but if we do it will be sometime in the future and in a way where it is clearly marked as fan art. If you find non original work I will be happy to be notified of which so I can remove them :-)

But the one posted here looks great, so it could be a nice addition to the database to have support for non original art :-)

Years ago, on a trip to Perry's Movies, I bought a copy of L&H's 'Berth Marks', it came in a plain white box; but the store also had a leaflet with a vintage advert promoting it as a new L&H talkie, so I pasted it onto the box. If anyone had the same edition, it would be better than a plain box.
