Sands of Iwo Jima 2 x 800ft b/w sound

You cant beat a bit of John Wayne action.
This is another one we bought from Movieland international here in Plymouth, it was one of our first feature films and , as you know , it was originally a Mountain release supplied on 4 x 400ft spools.
The quality is actually pretty good. Mountain films were always a bit of a gamble for quality so we were lucky with this one. Very few lines, (present when we bought it) and very good sound throughout. I think it runs for approx 75 minutes and has been edited down from the full length version of 100 minutes. Strictly speaking, and being blunt, only an idiot could get this sort of edit wrong but good old mountain managed to balls it up. The actual editing of the story is fine, but in reel one there are two very poor edits. The print doesn't have any splices in it aside the reel joins so there is nothing missing. I'ts just two obvious cuts.
Like The flying leathernecks, this one does use quite extensive real footage and it blends in perfectly. Some of the action is quite raw in these short bursts but does add to the realism of the movie. Action all the way, a good print throughout and in good condition.

For you information & with the help of wiki,
Sands of Iwo Jima is a 1950 war film starring John Wayne that follows a group of United States Marines from training to the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. The film also features John Agar, Adele Mara and Forrest Tucker, was written by Harry Brown and James Edward Grant, and directed by Allan Dwan. The picture was a Republic Pictures production.
Sands of Iwo Jima was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (John Wayne), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Recording (Daniel J. Bloomberg) and Best Writing, Motion Picture Story
The first recorded use of the phrase "lock and load" is in this film: twice as a metaphor for "get ready to fight" and once as a humorous invitation to drink alcohol (get loaded). As a period term, it similarly appears in the 1998 film Saving Private Ryan. Although the original use and implied meaning may be disputed, it typically described preparations for charging the M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle[6] by first locking the bolt back by pulling the charging handle rearward and then loading an 8-round en bloc clip into the now open magazine.
Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and John Bradley, (until 2016, Bradley was incorrectly identified as being a flag-raiser) the three survivors of the five Marines and one Navy corpsman who were credited with raising the second flag on Mount Suribachi during the actual battle, appear briefly in the film just prior to the re-enactment. Hayes was also the subject of a film biography, The Outsider, and Bradley the subject of a book by his son James, Flags of Our Fathers.
Also appearing as themselves are 1st Lt. Harold Schrier, who led the flag-raising patrol up Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima and helped raise the first flag, Col. David M. Shoup, later Commandant of the Marine Corps and recipient of the Medal of Honor at Tarawa, and Lt. Col. Henry P. "Jim" Crowe, commander of the 2nd Battalion 8th Marines at Tarawa, where he earned the U.S. Navy Cross.

It is interesting to consider this film was made only 5 years after the actual battle took place. Another good war pic!

I always thought it was a Powell Films release, not Mountain Films. I once hired the film from I think D.J. Hurst and it came on 5x400ft I'm sure on the leaders it said Ivy Films too. Also in my collection is another John Wayne The Fighting Seebees. Think that is full length, not sure where I bought it from. I don't think it was a UK release.

I still love the smell of film in the morning

David, thank you for correcting me.
I re checked Brothers copy and it was definatly 5 x 400ft reels, confirmed by the reel join splices. The first 800ft reel is made up of two and a bit reels and the second 800ft reel is full to the edge.
