Elmo 16CL Will Not Rewind

#1 by David Alligan , Mon Oct 29, 2018 4:47 pm

Just wondered if anyone on here could help please, I have a Elmo 16CL and it wont rewind, the take up spool turns but not the feed arm, I thought the belt had broken until I looked inside and saw it does not have a rewind belt but some sort of clutch.
Cpuld anyone give us some sort of idea what could be wrong, it has been rewinding OK
Dave

Sorry Dave, im not familiar with the Elmo 16mm machines, ive always used elf because of how easy they are to sort out and Len's seem to be plenty.
They use a lot less moving parts than many machines and all you need to sort them is two screwdriver, a blade and Philips type.

Looking for, Joe Kidd / The Outlaw Josey Wales on 16mm. Good prints only.

Dave, the service manual for these machines is very easy to get hold of. Also, when I'm home tomorrow I can take a photo of mine with the cover off so you can see what it should look like. The 16cl's are BRILLIANT machines once they've had a little remedial work, like all projectors now they are getting on a bit and need some tlc, but once you get it up to spec they absolutely purr. I like the Elfs very much but I consider the 16CL is every bit their equal.

Dave
Following on from Stuart's comment, you can use Google to find many links for a service manual.

I did talk to Dave on the phone and explain to him that this machine has a rather over the top arrangement for rewind, it has a magnetic clutch, this is energized by a 12volt feed via an electronic circuit, so you have to check with a meter if the 12 volts is present in the rewind mode, and go on from there.

Also, if there's no audio output it points to the capacitors or possibly a Toshiba transistor failing on the amp board (the amp board also controls the rewind function and they often fail together)

David, I'm really pleased to hear that. Would you be able to take it to Blackpool? I could pick it up from you there.

All I can add to the conversation is this, The Elmo is very much like the Eiki's I work with. The fabric belts usually don't stretch or fail and if all the internal rubber belts are good then you have a problem with the outer workings. There is a small screw that adjusts the tension on both takeup and return arms. Tighten them and your problem should go away. They are locaded on the far arms next to the spindles. You may have to take off a cap to get to them. You can also tighten the cam right on the take-up arm with a flat head screwredriver. After years of use it helps. If you are still having problems Urbanski here in the states has replacement arm belts but you should be okay just with a few adjustments.

I just acquired an Elmo 16 CL. After the take up reel gets slightly loaded it starts to skip a bit and not grip. Is this the belt? I ordered a new set so can replace if so. I wanted to check I'm on the right track to repair. Also, I found the service manual but not the user manual. Does anyone happen to have a PDF version of the user manual?
Thank you,
Ana

Again, if the belt is good and it starts rewinding when you choose then check the tension on the belt. I mispoke in another post and you need to turn the tension screw on the front arm clockwise. If this does not work then you need to take the back off and look for the large clutch screw on the forward arm. Make sure it is lubricated correctly and if the belt is in good condition then tighten it by turning it clockwise with a flat head screwdriver a quarter turn at a time so you don't break the belt until the tension is right.

Take up arm, again unscrew the rear arm tension on the bottom of the arm. If the belt is good then it should tighten up.
