Friday night film show for two young nieces....

#1 by Greg Perry , Sun Jul 01, 2018 12:26 am

We are taking care of two of our nieces for the weekend. One is age 9, and the other is 12. I set the projector up in the open area of the basement for a longer throw and to use the $10 ex-school pull-down screen that is hanging from the ceiling joists.
Three cartoons including: Tom & Jerry "Tee for Two", Alvin & the Chipmunks, and Sniffles and the Bookworm. T&J is Eastman, but surprisingly quite nice color. Alvin is LPP, and Sniffles is Fuji.
I don't think the younger one had ever seen a real movie projector before. I think they had fun, but of course these old school cartoons are much different than the cartoons of today. Tonight we will try and show L&H "Helpmates" to further their film indoctrination......

That is something: Watching film from an old projector for the first time! And T&J is great in any occasion for any age!

Update on Saturday night's film show for the nieces:

In advance of the L&H film screening I asked the two nieces if they knew who Laurel and Hardy were. It was so sad to hear them say "No, never heard of them..." This is similar to what Tom P. ran into as he related in his post on the "Northern Pursuit" topic.... Amazing they don't show any of these classic comedies in school anymore...

The great news is they REALLY enjoyed and laughed a lot thru the film "Helpmates". The younger one asked if I had any more! Told her I had a whole bunch more L&H they can watch when they come to visit again!

Also watched a 16mm "digest" of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (which they had seen on shiny thing before) and the classic "The Red Balloon" (which the kids had never heard of either...sigh)....

I think we are ALL going to have to start seriously trying to get younger relatives introduced to real film whenever we get the chance.
A nice fun, family evening which my wife and I and the two nieces really enjoyed....

Absolutely brilliant Greg, you can’t beat a good family film show.My grandchildren like a film now and again, last one we did was million dollar duck a 16mm Disney.Certainly is surprising how few youngsters have any knowledge of real film and projectors.
Still I suppose it’s all at there fingertips on iPads and so on.
Anyway very nice Greg.📽📽📽📽📽

All sounds great,I'm currently training a 20 year old lad at work and loves films,I thought great but he hadn't heard of many of the Stars I like including Laurel and Hardy,I was surprised but I guess I shouldn't be,Mark
