Disney's Escape to Witch Mountain (1975)

#1 by Tim Duncan , Wed May 30, 2018 2:50 pm

For those not familiar with the story, young siblings Tony and Tia display telekinetic and telepathic abilities. When they are discovered, a powerful man has the children brought to him in order to exploit their powers. But the children escape from the man's estate and race against time to find their true family, whom they were separated from years prior to being placed with a foster family. I find the full-length feature to be an entertaining live-action Disney production. This is the condensed version, mounted on a 1200' reel. It was released under the Walt Disney Educational Media Company banner in 1982. Original price for this (written inside of the film can) was $578.00. The colors on this are excellent, so I am inclined to believe that this was printed on polyester film stock. Screenshots coming! :-)

That seems like a very nice print, Tim! Thanks for sharing! I checked an inflation calculator, and that would be $2,691 in todays value.

Hi Vidar! Do you have the sequel by chance? "Return to Witch Mountain"? :-)

No, I have not. Would be nice though. Christopher Lee in that, right?

Hi Tim,

Great pictures!

How would you compare the condensed version to the original full-length (assuming you have seen that one too)?
Does this version preserve the flavor of the original?

I think there are a few other titles that were condensed educational versions as well. I think I have seen a "Treasure Island" available.
Anyone know of others?

Hi Vidar! Yes, the sequel has Christopher Lee and Bette Davis in it. :-)

Hi Greg! I think the cutdown does relatively well to tell the story of the full-length feature, which I have seen. Of course, some other good moments from the film were omitted in the cutdown. I know Disney released "Old Yeller" (1957) in a condensed version, as I have that one. It is EXCELLENT by the way! I have seen that one for sale on three different occasions on eBay.

Very nice looking print Tim. I recently sold one of the abridged Disney films (Treasure Island.) The Disney editors did a great job on condensing the story. Their digests were always well edited in my opinion.

Great shots Tim! That print looks really good. I have the Treasure Island cutdown in 16mm but it is faded. I did pick up the full feature of Treasure Island on 16mm but have not watched it yet. I will post some pics when I do.
