How many different LPU's did Elf/Eiki make then?

#1 by Stuart Reid , Fri May 25, 2018 6:20 pm

Curious about this, I have one which has no model number, but it's in the blue colour matching the older projectors. I know there's a newer version in bronze which is slimmer and has a carrying handle. I think there are operational differences too, anyone know more about it and care to chime in?

Stuart,I too have LPU which i always assumed was Elf/Eki.Mine is also blue it has no markings or model numbers and consists of a separate play off arm with separate rewind motor and a separate take up arm with own motor. Each motor can be controlled separately and the two arms are attached to a wooden board of my making so the arms can be used for all types of projectors. It is a bit cumbersome to cart around.
As I said I just asumed it was Elf ,also the person I got it from said it was.
There are photos in some of my previous posts of my various LPUs . I also have a separate one that carries the extended Fumeo arms both for the machine itself and a separate set up using the Fumeo take up arm attached to a projector table.
Obviously the Fumeo equipment no problem identifying.
(Sorry cant put up pics as at work showing that didgi stuff)

Well here's my LPU, loaded with The Amazing Howard Hughes, the TV movie starring Tommy Lee Jones. I've got a Goldberg E-Z-HUB as my takeup as I believe they're gentler on the film. As you can see my LPU is a semi-tower design. It's supposed to have a roller that goes over the feed arm of the projector but that's long gone, so I use a small reel with rubber bands over any sharp edges. The red switch is the on/off, but I have absolutely no idea what the other switch does, it doesn't affect the rotation of the motor. Cleverly it does also have a mains socket so you can plug your projector into it (power is always supplied irregardless of the position of the red switch). |addpics|97x-9-bbc3.jpg|/addpics|

That looks great, Stuart.

I have this one, probably the more common. It has a variable torque dial added by a previous owner as a mod, making it very Super 8-friendly too.

Martin, do you have spindle adapters for super 8?

Yes, in fact I bought the cheaper black vinyl 3D printed ones (not brass) from Van-Eck. Edwin hadn't tested the vinyl adaptors with the LPU, so after I ordered them, I confirmed to Edwin that they were a perfect fit, and now it's listed as an accessory on Van-Eck website.

One thing I regret was that every time I bought a blank spool for putting my home movies on, I threw away the Standard 8 adaptor.

Can anyone help? My images aren't posting, and I don't seem to be able to delete either of these posts either. Thanks!

I see your image fine. Or is it a different post, Martin?

Yes, Vidar. There were two posts where the image tag code were shown instead of the pictures the tags were supposed to represent. I don't know what caused it. I saw nothing wrong in the post before Greg deleted it. Seems like a hickup in the forum software.

Different post, Vidar. I added four images and none of them showed, but they did first in the preview for some reason.

Martin, you could remove them after clicking edit, then re-insert them. Another solution might be to delete the original links and download afresh from your computer. I have had that happen to me elsewhere.

Here is a link to the Van Eck site. I'm not quite sure why it's listed as UK, perhaps because of the voltage range?

Just trying to post pictures again.

I was replying to Stuart to show the Van-Eck Super 8 adaptors for the Eiki LPU. Plus, you'll see my solution here for a stationary 16mm spindle to hold the roller using a photographic bracket with rubber pressure pads.

That's a very elegant solution Martin. It's made me consider utilising mine in a similar manner.

Well, I've just ordered the 16mm adapters and the feed arm roller assembly from Van Eck. Next I need to check the torque of the LPU to see if it's gentle enough to deal with super 8.

I have never owned or seen a LPU in action. On the 16mm, do you use it for bigger reels only, or to avoid the wear of the motors of the projector too?

Eivind, personally I'm not concerned about motor wear on a 16mm machine, they were made to be pretty hardy things. In fact the only motor that I have had fail on me is unfortunately the one for my 16CL Xenon, and it has proved a fruitless search to replace it. I use the LPU for feature films without breaks.

Yes, same here, but it's quite a long process to set up so I don't use it that often. It takes a while to line up the roller and the take-up spool to ensure no snagging. Fun toy, though!

Here it is in action:

Looks great, is that a Fumeo spool?

There’s an Elf long play unit plus spools for sale on eBay,this is same as one of mine.
£95 plus postage or offer, certainly make for easier rewind.📽

Indeed, rewinding would be a cinch with these. Watching closely!
