This year makes 51 years since I bought my first film, 'The Trooping of the Colour' in standard 8. It was another 6 years before I got into the hobby seriously. I'm still learning. I always used a tape splicer on my Super 8 home movies, but when I moved up to 16mm, I wanted to use the traditional method of cement. Last week I had trouble with one print, that had run a few times before without trouble, though the splices used to make your heart stop as they ran through. The problem has been caused by warpage, which I looked into this week and found this is caused by overuse of film cement, or being pressed down too long. This has put me off from making a cement splice again; the films could be OK for years, but one never knows. So this week I ordered a CIR splicer from David Guest. I shall keep my Premier Splicer, but doubtful it will ever be used again, just kept as an example of film history and fine British engineering.
