Still learning

#1 by Robert Crewdson ( deleted ) , Thu Jan 18, 2018 6:12 pm

This year makes 51 years since I bought my first film, 'The Trooping of the Colour' in standard 8. It was another 6 years before I got into the hobby seriously. I'm still learning. I always used a tape splicer on my Super 8 home movies, but when I moved up to 16mm, I wanted to use the traditional method of cement. Last week I had trouble with one print, that had run a few times before without trouble, though the splices used to make your heart stop as they ran through. The problem has been caused by warpage, which I looked into this week and found this is caused by overuse of film cement, or being pressed down too long. This has put me off from making a cement splice again; the films could be OK for years, but one never knows. So this week I ordered a CIR splicer from David Guest. I shall keep my Premier Splicer, but doubtful it will ever be used again, just kept as an example of film history and fine British engineering.

Hi Robert! Welcome back to the forum. You have been missed. I have also been in the hobby for over 50 years and as you says, there is still a lot to learn

I agree that the C.I.R. splicers are all that is ever needed.
The best there is.

All others now lie redundant in my collection of tape and cement splinters.

CIR is not missing frames either, with cement you lose one frame every time. Finally let myself buy a 9.5mm CIR, so now I have one for each gauge.

Welcome back

Now we are on the subject chaps, (Hello Robert, glad to see you back), Does anyone have the instructions to the super 8 cir splicer, bought one recently from Ian but no paperwork, I looked on the other channel but the instructions i found are for the 16mm version which looks different,

The reason I don't want to use cement again is that reluctantly I am going to have to lose a frame or so with each splice. I risk perforation damage by leaving the film as it is. Thanks for the welcome Vidar and Tom; you have a good collection Vidar.
Have you seen this Tom; this video looks like standard 8. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wVlRAI33EE

If I remember correctly you have to put a piece of tape across the top of the splicing block to catch the waste from the hole punch. Also keep the underneath clean the holes cling there and the handle must be kept free of old bits of tape. Good splicers.

I still love the smell of film in the morning

I am sure when my Super 8mm C.I.R. Catozzo deluxe first arrived with me, someone very kindly sent me an electronic copy of the original instruction manual.

If I can find it Tom on my pc ext HD, I will mail it over to you.

The splicers may have changed since you got yours Vidar. This Yellow one is Super 8, and the Grey one is the Deluxe model at 399 Euros.

What is the main difference in the deluxe one?
Can yo get parts for these still, (im guessing they would be as much as a new one though)
