Viva Las Vegas

#1 by Tom Photiou , Fri Oct 27, 2017 10:17 pm

Tonight i cleaned up and viewed my latest purchase from Ian, the 3 x 400ft Viacom print of Viva Las Vegas. This one came to me on a decent plastic 1200ft spool which has a good large core so no side wobble.
As for the print, well, it has to be either LPP or Agfa, the print is stunning with vibrant colours, & absolutely no fade what so ever, (my images do not show how vibrant the colours are by a long way), pin sharp focus and 1st class sound. Very pleased with this one, even the joins are un-noticed as they go through the 1200HD.

As for the plot, well, did any Elvis film have one, certainly the best of the Elvis films and this edit is very very good with 80% of the edit containing his songs and dance sequences with the very yummy Ann Margret.
Lucky Jackson (Elvis) goes to Las Vegas, Nevada to participate in the city's first annual Grand Prix Race. However, his race car, an Elva Mk. VI, is in need of a new engine in order to compete in the event.
Lucky raises the necessary money in Las Vegas, but he loses it when he is shoved into the pool by the hotel's nubile swimming instructor, Rusty Martin (Ann-Margret). Lucky then has to work as a waiter at the hotel to replace the lost money to pay his hotel bill, as well as enter the hotel's talent contest in hopes of winning a cash prize sizable enough to pay for his car's engine.
During all this time, Lucky attempts to win the affections of Rusty. His main competition arrives in the form of Count Elmo Mancini (Cesare Danova), who attempts to win both the Grand Prix and the affections of Rusty. Rusty soon falls in love with Lucky, and immediately tries to change him into what she wants.

lovely print Tom.
They are Viacom negatives but the LPP prints like yours and my own, were struck later from the negatives by Derann.

I have many other Elvis original Viacom full length Super 8mm prints and none look like these Derann Viva Las Vegas prints.
Most can still be ok, but nothing like these!

When did you purchase yours from Ian, Tom?

A German UFA print also. Either way all the low fade ones are beauties.

Tom,

Viva Las Vegas was actually one of the last 3x400' Ken/M.G.M. releases (together with "The Time Machine" & "The Cincinnati Kid"), Derek aquired the negative from Ken Films when they closed down and re-printed over here (together with a few prints of the 3x400' "The Towering Inferno") on LPP stock, hence the lovely colours. There are some Ken prints about, but they are a bit softer, and the colours are no where near as good as Derann's.

You are spot on Barry. There is a huge difference in the vibrancy of the colours between the re runs by Derann and the original release prints by Ken,nowadays

I'd also like to find one of those reprints of The Towering Inferno but from what I've seen, they are harder to find now than even the Elvis film is.

I'm pleased my Viva Las Vegas reassuringly was advertised as having its own original Derann boxes and artwork.

I heard stories that some of the later Derann prints were very dark but I haven't found this to the case on the one I have.
Perhaps only a few prints suffered in this manner.

I have one of the Towering Inferno's, mine has near perfect colour, couldn't believe how good it was when I first watched it, it was pleasing to see proper blacks instead of the usual magenta tones in the night scene's.

Watched my Viva Las Vegas last night and WOW, what a print and what colour, must be Derann as the print is pin sharp with some of the best colour I have seen on super 8mm, 99.9% mint copy too, to say I was buzzing after watching it is an understatement
