B&H TQ1 with standard lens, scope lens question

#1 by Tom Photiou , Sat Sep 23, 2017 9:41 pm

Hi all, please take a look at these images and can i ask,
For the B&H TQ1 with standard 50mm lens, (asking for a friend please),with no screw thread on the back of this sankor lens, (48mm version), how can this lens be utilised for this particular machine please.
Is there a specific bracket that was ever made for these?
I know from the other thread that a scope lens generally screwed directly onto the existing lens but with no screw thread on this lens i cant seem to work out how best to get this in use.

Have i told anyone i'm after Die Hard?

That's a fairly unusual size from any I've seen or owned Tom.

I'm sure a ring could be sourced or made, but it isn't a size of scope ring I see regularly surfacing.

A 52mm scope ring like the type I'm pursuing from John could be utilized for this application but you would also need a neoprene liner around the inside of the scope ring like I could supply you with.
Then the lens would fit correctly and snugly and would be clamped just like any other using a thumbscrew mounted to the scope lens holder.

You would have to find and fit a shoe to your machine's frame though for it to be quickly and professionally detachable when not in use.

Tom
First of all, the anamorphic lens as shown was not intended for a Bell & Howell where they screw into the basic backing lens.
I have looked at my TQI and see there are three tapped holes near the lens to which a holder could be fixed. But the problem is you need some form of fixing bracket in the first place!
There is the possibility that a clamp could be fabricated to clamp the anamorphic to the existing 2" (?) lens.

Would it even have to sit on top of the primary lens though Maurice?

Can it not just sit closely in front using a scope ring just as Super 8mm projectors all do?

Hi Guys,

I have to thank Tom for this - as it is me that has the problem. I also have a Kowa 8-Z lens but the issue is with my Sankor scope lens - I have come up with a very basic solution at present which means that when I want to watch a standard format picture on 16mm - I swap to my other lens - as with some tubing and gorilla tape - i have temporarily attached my Sankor lens to my standard 50mm lens. I know its not ideal but I watched the 1st reel of Robert Shaw in Swashbuckler yesterday and I was pleased with the scope image. If any of you have any further ideas regarding a more permanent solution - please keep thinking. From what you all have said - including you Andrew - I seem to be in possession of an awkward lens !!

But thanks for thinking about a solution and as I said any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. By the way both of my scope lens came with free standing holders - but none of them are tall enough for my Bell and Howell TQ1 - and balancing one of the lens holders on books etc just hasn't worked and isn't practical.

So any other support or help will be greatly appreciated

So is a shoe fitted to the projector body for a scope ring, not an option David?

The TQI tapped holes are near, but higher and in front of the basic lens. If you click on the Van Eck photo you can see one of the holes on the panel between the exciter lamp cover and the edge of the top spool.

Thanks Maurice, but couldn't a further set of holes be drilled and tapped into the machines body close to the lens to accept a shoe socket and then bracket or ring similar say to how some Super 8mm machines do this?

All I was thinking David, is this then allows any scope lens you like to be fitted so long as you find or manufacture a scope ring to suit it.

Places like FFR for example, manufacture just about any sized scope ring anyone could ever desire.

FFR are a German company David. The rings average around the £60 - £70 Mark plus P&P.
Edwin at Van Eck also 3d print many of these now for reasonable bucks.
Van Eck is a Dutch company David.
