STAR WARS DILEMMA

#1 by Graham Sinden , Sun May 30, 2021 9:11 am

Hi, I've been wanting to make up a few trailer reels from the ones that I have and I want to make a Star Wars Trailer reel and add more as and when I get them. Currently I only have 2 trailers The Original 1977 and The Phantom Menace. Both of these were purchased brand new from Derann but just kept on their original reels. Originally my thinking was to put the 1977 original first as that is the simplest and sets the scene but the way the series has panned out, The Phantom Menace, IS the first in the series and should go first on the reel. What do you think the order should be on a Star Wars trailer reel?

Graham, its a bit of an awkward one this. If you wanted to put them in the story order i guess its the Phantom menace first as you said. Other than that, if you want to put them in year order release then thats also an option. We only have The Phantom menace, Empire Strikes back and Revenge of the sith scope trailers so ours are all over the place.
I think if i had what i call the main three, Original Star Wars, Empire and return of the Jedi, i would have those three on one reel. I'll be honest and say aside the first two, i have never sat through any of the others. Now Disney have it they will just churn them out one after the other.

Thanks Tom. Great idea about keeping the original ones on a separate reel. Jedi trailer has been on Ebay a couple of times recently but didn't buy either of them. Hopefully I will get the other 2 eventually, plus one more of the prequels. I do have one golden rule with trailer reels which I need to keep in that I never splice Flat and Scope films together. I can't remember if Phantom Menace is Scope or not which will affect what I do with it.

Our Phantom menace trailer is scope.im not too sure if it was available .
Quite a few of our trailers are put at the start of films but i am looking to do a couple of 200ft reels with 80s trailers,90s trailers and 2000s. Some trailers we have will be left on there individual reels like westside story and a few others.

My personal house rule is that if I buy a trailer (and/or original box) which has leader and tail intact, then I keep it as it is. I only splice up compilation reels from stuff which has already been chopped at the top and tail by former owners.

Thats pretty much my rulle but its quite rare these days to recieve trailers left in there original state with the leader fully intact. Good when when you get one though.

I have to agree with both Martin and Tom as I also don't like cutting original leaders. I have many new shorts and trailers, particularly those that come in a printed box, where I leave them like that. Although I also have a few shorter trailers just in white boxes I'm toying with the idea of making trailer reels although I have to leave a bit of trailer at the ends as the sound may still be there. I made the mistake once of splicing together Video killed the radio star with Another brick in the wall end to end but it chopped of the last second of sound from the video killed the radio star. One day I might separate them again and re-record in Stereo but I have to get the GS working properly for that.

I also agree with Tom in that most films I've bought from Ebay recently, all have the leaders spliced on so I suppose putting films on big reels is very popular amongst collectors whereas today I've gone off 1200ft reels and much prefer smaller reels.

Where i get frustrated sometimes is when you win a trailer only to find it is the teaser from a full reel. For example, the Danial Graig Bond trailers. I won casino royal but when i recieved it the one i got was cut from the 200ft reel that Derann put out. It should have been the full trailer and the shorter trailer. What i recieved was the shorter one. You would have to be careful with the Jurassic park trailers as these were the same.

I understand your frustration Tom as I've had a different but similar problem. Last year I won two trailers. Let me state by saying I generally have no problem with the seller as he always gives me a postage refund on multiple purchases and describes the films properly. The trailers I bought were the Tomb Raider 2 and the Italian Job (2003 version). The trailers are great and decent length both over 2 minutes. The running time of each was clearly stated on Ebay. The frustration I had was finding out later that both trailers were originally on Derann's 'ACTION' trailer reel along with a third trailer (not sure if this was for sale). The trailers are separated on individual reels purely to maximise profit. I would much rather the seller keep the trailers joined together as originally sold and I would be willing to pay a higher price knowing this was how the reel originally. I have now joined the trailers but would rather have them all together without the splices inbetween.
