The Sankyo 800 stereo

#1 by Tom Photiou , Sat Dec 19, 2020 4:12 pm

This is a machine that i will try and find in 2021 if all goes well.
I have never owned one nor have i seen one in the flesh, or any other Sankyo for that matter. I cant really explain why i would like one but everything i have read about this model is always positive. Over the last few years i have spoken to Bill regarding this model and i took on board what he said. I think for me its the look of it.
The 800ft spool capacity would be fine as like my Bauer, it gives my Elmos a bit of a rest. I know one of the down sides is that like the Bauers, they do use a lot of plastic where the Elmo's use metal parts within the claw mechanism etc.
Could any users of this model Sankyo please give any insight to there reliability?
How does it perform to other models and would you call it a quite runner? If anyone has one of these and also an Elmo, how does the sound quality compare?
Any information would be welcome, as always i will keep my eyes peeled for the "bargain". I know they are out there.

I feel the same way, Tom. That was the projector I always wanted growing up. I thought it was cool looking, like a nice piece of hi-fi kit.

If you stumble upon two of them, let me know! I'll do likewise, lol.

One sold on ebay 2-3 weeks ago, £175.00. Not in too bad condition either, i watched it till the end. It had been on £150.00 for sometime, then a last minute bid just stole it. You need one with the f1.0 lens, which can command as much as the projector itself. Good luck both of you picking one up, they do come up on ebay quite a lot.................

I have two Sankyo Stereo 800 projectors and I rate them very highly.
https://www.filmkorn.org/super8data/data..._stereo_800.htm
They run fairly quietly and are well made. This model, being stereo, has two inbuilt speakers, but, of course, it sounds better through two external speakers like the Elmo two speaker assembly.
Yes. I would recommend one, or two.

Tom,

A tidbit on the Sankyo 800 from Ignacio Benedeti Corzo's blog: https://mimundoensuper-8.blogspot.com/20...o-buy-good.html
This is a Spanish language blog, which can be easily translated to English, but the translation sometimes creates a bit of awkward English, which is not all that problematic....

"The Sankyo 800 Stereo, with 150W lamp, that can be found cheaply and, if you're lucky, with the optional 15-30mm 1.0 lens, sound quality is very good. The Sankyo 800 has an additional feature: it can transfer sound from one track to the other without connecting any cables or external accessories, something that only can do certain projectors much more expensive."

It's interesting that Sankyo sold this machine with the f1.4 lens as standard. The 702 I just got came with the f1.3, but who knows how it got there over the years?

You would think that their highest-end machine would be sold with a better lens as standard, rather than as an "optional accessory", as it says in the brochure regarding the f1.0 lens. At least sell it with the f1.3 as standard, for heaven's sake!

Now that I have the 702, I'm trying to convince myself that there is no reason to seek out an 800. I'm not going to use the stereo feature. The 800 does have a better amp, but in my small basement, built-in speakers usually suffice even for my machines with weaker amps, and if I want to treat myself, I pipe into an external amp with speakers via the line-out. Even with my modest 15 year old Bose CD player that no longer plays CDs, I'm sure the amp and speakers are better than the 40+ year old technology Sankyo put in their projectors.

I have two Sankyo 800s, both nice machines, one with the 1.4 lens and the other has the 1.0, Mark

I also like the Sankyo as mentioned previously, I did think it odd that the standard lens was a 1:4 but all things considering, it does still give a good image, but I did buy the optional 1:0 lens, it isn't until you see the difference one after the other that you realise the top end lens should have been standard on the their flagship machines.
My version is the 880 OMS which was originally, (as far as I m aware), only for the Japanese market.
While it is fitted with the top lens, the Elmo lens still gives a bigger zoom to fill the screen from a shorter distance.
This one was completely serviced and new heads fitted by Bill Parsons so I was very lucky as it ended up being like new.

Sadly I don't use them very often these days but would recommend one, I think when it comes to projectors anything with a 1200ft and above reel capacity has overtaken these smaller capacity machines, well it has in my home, Mark

I do like the 702 I recently acquired, and a better lens would definitely kick it up a notch. Upgrading it for 800 foot reels is on my radar, too.
I need to see if I can get my Eumig f1.2 lens to fit in it.
