This cartoon is really amazing, I purchased this used from Steve Osborn a few years back. Hugh Harman made this in 1939 and some of the staff members who worked on the film were veterans of World War I and knew what combat was like. The animators did a great job alternating scenes between very realistic and grim warfare and the polar opposite, cute and happy animals in a peaceful setting. Grampa Squirrel tells the tale of "Man" and his wars, to his curious grandchildren--the war that led to man's complete elimination from Earth. Interesting to me, this was made in 1939 when perhaps there was already some uneasiness about another possible war on the horizon, and only 20 years removed from WWI...This was remade in 1955 by Hanna-Barbera (I think) and retitled "Goodwill to Men". I do not have that one, but have heard it was updated with the Atomic Age in mind...
