The Three Musketeers, Derann 5 x 600ft

#1 by Tom Photiou , Thu Mar 14, 2024 10:44 pm

This is the 1948 version of the musketeers starring Gene Kelly, Lana Turner, Vincent Price and Angela Lansbury.
This has to be one of Derann’s best quality features with colours so vibrant on-screen the film really does look like a Technicolour print, but as we all know, there were no IB Tech super 8 releases. While these images are good, they are not as deep in colour as the on-screen image.
Sound and image are very good and it is clear to see that the Derann had an excellent master to produce this release on 8mm and I for one cannot fault the print in any way.
Originally supplied on 5 x 600ft reels this is a two hour film so we have joined it onto two 1200ft spools which obviously makes for a better viewing with only one break.

Because of the high quality of the image and how vivid the colours are it is quite a film to view, but, on the downside, because it is from 1948 it is quite cheesy hence why I prefer the 70s version, but it's certainly entertaining with plenty of action, clearly Gene Kelly's dancing skills come into play the way he moves about during his sword fencing as well as the fact he generally did all his own stunts of which there are many in this movie.
Footage from this Three Musketeers appears in Singin' in the Rain. It was used as part of the Lockwood/Lamont film The Royal Rascal.

Well, The Adventures of Robin Hood is quite cheesy too, but still a wonderful film, so that is fine. More worried I would not like the musical part of it now. Not sure Ishould try :-)

Still good films as you say Vidar, I think as we get older our tastes change, this was one bought by my Brother who very much enjoys the films of earlier decades and to be fair, aside a few I do enjoy them as well, titles like Beau Geste and Pork Chop hill, but for my own collection, its the later titles I prefer.
When they re-made the Three Musketeer's in 1973 I'm not too sure why they decided to make the story over two films but both are good. The third instalment in 1989 was The return of the Musketeer's where you may recall Roy Kinnear died after falling from his horse during shooting.

Films like this are fun to watch,in a way because of the content it’s timeless, they don’t make them like this any more!
Excellent 👍
