35mm prints on ebay

#1 by Tom Photiou , Wed Jun 15, 2022 8:34 am

Looking on ebay recently, one particular seller seems to have some very good titles for sale on 35mm. A few weeks back there was another 35mm feature from another seller, (i cant recall the title). I'm wondering if these prints are actually meant to be allowed for sale, surely these 35mm films belong to film companies or libraries. The one that was on a few weeks ago was listed with images of which one in particular bemused me, The label on the image clearly stated that the film belonged to the Rank organisation. It also had a phone number to ring if it appeared outside of the company that owned it. your thoughts?

Some years ago a then well-known UK 16mm dealer was advertising Walt Disney 35mm features.
He was prosecuted for his offences.
I don't remember his sentence, but his regular 16mm mailing lists dried up.

I just find seeing so many 35mm full theatrical features prints on ebay quote odd, as said, one seller appears to have rather a lot which i find a bit odd to say the least.

owning 35mm features is no different to owning 16mm. we are all not really supposed to have them.

I remember Derek Simmonds talking to me about 16mm and 35mm prints, technically it is not illegal to own the actual print, you break the law once you start to show it, as cinemas have theatrical licences and are allowed to show them, so I guess the guys selling 35mm prints on ebay are technically not breaking the law, but who really own these prints could also be questioned, as they were never intentioned to be sold on after their intial theatrical run, as Derek once told me it's really a grey area, like the rights to 35mm trailers, which is another story entirely!
