Meteor, as most collectors know, is quite a common find on the 8mm gauge. It often crops up on ebay and is more than often red, or well on the way to becoming faded.
We bought this print at least 30 years ago now and ours has part one in its original case on its 400ft spool, we have parts two and three joined together onto 1 full 600ft spool so the main action after part one is uninterrupted.
Meteor is a 1979 science fiction disaster film directed by Ronald Neame, and starring Sean Connery and Natalie Wood. The film's premise, which follows a group of scientists struggling with Cold War politics after an asteroid is detected to be on a collision course with Earth, was inspired by a 1967 MIT report Project Icarus. The screenplay was written by Oscar winner Edmund H. North and Stanley Mann.
The film was a box office failure and received negative reviews, but was nonetheless nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound.
The print itself is n very good condition with hardly a mark on it other than a very thin line to the right for the first few hundred feet, but this really is a very thin line. Like most MGM releases the sound is very good throughout with decent bass and treble levels to make a good impact when the impacts of the splinters scenes are up on screen.
The colour here for us, is the surprise, its been several years since we viewed it and we we recall part one having a bit of a red hue on the dark scenes but generally still good, We were very please to see this is still the case, and even better, parts two and three are still untouched by fade, colours are excellent with the black of space in those scenes still, very black, so for now this one is still a keeper.
Not the best of sci fi movies, but edited to this 50 minute version, it improves the movie by making it more action packed and includes most of the main impact scenes, all in all, a good edit of an average sci fi.
Like many of the big "all star" cast films, it may have been better with less big names. Just look at the line up here,
Sean Connery
Natalie Wood
Karl Malden
Brian Keith
Martin Landau
Trevor Howard
Richard Dysart
Henry Fonda
Too many stars for what is an average movie. Great fun to watch stll and with colour like this, not so common.
