Film Memorabilia

#1 by Robert Crewdson , Fri Apr 24, 2020 11:23 am

I have just acquired two items relative to two of my 16mm prints. The first is a ticket to attend a special screening of the Ronald Shiner film 'Keep it Clean' (1956). The ticket came from an album from the estate of Ron Kelroy. He was a member of an old circus family, and appeared in the film as part of The Three Kelroys, a trampoline act. Also in the film was Tonia Bern, who gave up her career when she married speed ace Donald Campbell.

The second item is an Australian poster for one of my most treasured films, My Wife's Family (1956), starring Ronald Shiner and Ted Ray. This was the 3rd English version of this story, the others being 1931 and 1941. This 3rd version is based on the play by Fred Duprez, father of actress June Duprez (The Four Feathers, etc). The screenplay was co-written by Director Gilbert Gunn and Talbot Rothwell. Rothwell wrote many scripts for the Carry On films, including the most popular one 'Carry on Camping'.

My two posters finally arrived this morning from Australia. Another copy of 'My wife's Family' in slightly better condition, and 'Keep it Clean'.

Just received three more original film posters from Australia. Unfortunately, I don't have a print of 'Reluctant Heroes', never seen one on sale. i do have prints of the other two; 'Siege of the Saxons' I saw at the cinema, it was the supporting picture to 'Jason and the Argonauts', and the 1979 version of 'The Four Feathers': I got a nice low fade copy from David Guest a few years ago.

Robert,

Some nice posters there! Do you plan on framing these/displaying them in your home? I don't have any film posters myself, but at some point would like to get a few to add to the walls in the film viewing area...

Hi Greg; I don't have the space to display on the wall. Also, you have to keep them out of sunlight; even normal daylight can fade colour.

Yes, the fade is a good point. Probably safest to store them in a cool dark place and take them out during screenings...
The posters definitely bring back the memories of when these films were actually being shown in the theaters.

It might be an idea to photograph the posters, and having had them blown up, they could be placed in photo frames.

Received this today. It's sad when you think of the number of prints that must have been produced over the years, then purposely destroyed, making them virtually impossible to obtain today.

Certainly is very sad Robert that so much was destroyed in times gone by.Looking at old film catalogues with page after page of good films all now lost and as you say purposely destroyed.
One good thing though it gives us collectors something to do to try and find that elusive print.
Like the posters very nice.

The other year I saw a 16mm catalogue from an independent distributor, I don't recall the name, but they had a lot of top films, like Ealing's 'Dead of Night', and many titles of Tod Slaughter.
