Anyone had a 16mm optical sound print that was out of sync. I have a feature called Grizzly and it's around 5 seconds out of sync, just about to bin it, shame as it's mint, which is not surprising as who would watch a film out of sync by that much.

Thanks Stuart, not worth it mate, the film is pretty dire, not an oscar winner that's for sure, it's on two nice 1600' reels so not a complete loss.

I have seen the odd film advertised on dealers lists where the sound was out of sync, but sometimes only for about ten minutes. Then I've seen other films advertised as low sound.I suppose these were so expensive to produce that they let them pass rather than scrap them. A whole film out of sync would be no good to anybody. Shame; at least you can salvage the spools and box/cans, as you might get a feature supplied without a box as I have had a few times.

I have an odd reel that is out of sync by seconds for the entire reel. Even though it is a Spanish production that was dubbed in post (for both English and Spanish) it's pretty noticeable. I'm keeping it though as it has importance to me, just a bummer that such things were not as quality controlled when being struck.

Yes the entire film is out of sync, I have recently purchased a film on cores so the reels will come in handy.

Out of synch optical sound faults on a 16mm print ruin my enjoyment. It is one of the first things I look for on a newly acquired film. It is easier for me to allow for colour fade and wear lines as the eye and brain work to compensate for these visual flaws.
Is it because our sense of hearing is the most acute sense and will not allow the the mismatch of lip movement seen, to what is heard ?
These faults seem to occur in later prints of older films. Careless inserts or repairs to the sound or picture negatives would throw the combined print out the synch.
One thing, in a very large auditorium, the sound requires slight advancement to compensate for accoustic delay of the sound reaching those seated at the back. So it could be intended.
When editing lip synch sequences when the sound is out I can never decide, looking and listening, whether out of synch is ahead or behind. I rely on the visual wave form to find the peak level to get the sequence back into synch.

If so, I like it. No binning, okay?

That's a shame about the sound! I thoroughly enjoy that movie! It was alternately called "Claws", to cash in on the success of "Jaws".
