My recent boneheaded mistake...

#1 by Greg Perry , Sun Jun 10, 2018 3:04 pm

Last night before bed I thought I would watch a half-hour TV episode on film.
Quickly mounted the reel and started watching.
Show was almost over when I looked back at the take-up reel and saw this...

Unthreaded the Kodak CT-1000 and successfully rewound....

I am amazed the film stacked up above the 400 ft. reel/spool edge like this....lucky for me.....

I always have a Taylor Reel 2300’ capacity as take up :-) But try now to mark the 2300’ reels, so if anyone borrows, they know the length. You got lucky there though :-)

You were lucky there Greg. My take up reel is 2,000ft, and one worry was watching a film then checking that it was 2,000 ft and not 2,300ft. I have another projector, which i'm not using, and I checked it out and found that after about 200ft, the take up didn't have the power to keep going; maybe the fabric belt just needs a clean. I looked back, and there was film all over the floor. Luckily it wasn't one of my most treasured films. It was quite a worry, gently rewinding this film, and making sure it didn't get tangled. I do have a 2,300ft reel, but my other take up reel is of better quality, and only 3 of my films exceed 2,000 ft.

Blimy Greg, you were jammy not to have most of that on the floor.

Yes, was previously watching a bunch of cartoons that I put up recently on ebay. Normally don't have the 400 ft. reel for take-up but somehow did then.

I guess I am better off not using the projector when I am half asleep and not paying attention to things...
It is impressive the Kodak operated smoothly enough to pile the film up like that without it toppling over....

I usually use a 1800' reel for shorter films. I like that reel. But my Elmo 16-CL is sometimes struggling with large reels, so for features I use a 2300' with a smaller core. That makes the projector "stronger" with that smaller core. I am pretty sure this has saved me from doing the same mistake :-)

I've got 4 features that are complete on one reel. Only one of them is 2,000 ft, so as I don't remember which is the odd one, I have to check the size of the core.

It would be interesting Greg, to see if you could make that happen again! :-) So how did you handle rewinding?

My films are on 1200' spools or smaller. My take up spool is an empty 1600'. :-)
