A 16mm Storage Question please

#1 by Tom Photiou , Sun Jan 28, 2018 8:04 pm

As a relatively new collector to 16mm i just wanted to ask what may be a scilly question, i wont getting that many of these films but i want to ensure i dont put too much stress on the bottom ones, i know they need to be laid flat but how many films do you boys think would be a reasonable stack to store them please, as you can see i have spread mine out to what i feel is correct but i have seen some images where they are stacked 10 or more.

10 is fine, if stored in cans or library type cardbord boxes. I store up to 10 35 mm reels, that way, as well.

You can go higher than you are showing in the photo Tom, like Mats said, 10 is OK. Most of mine are in boxes. With such a huge choice of titles out there, and films you never even thought of, you will be very lucky to stick to your planned limit.

Robert, i think you may be right there, the titles i have bought since mid-December i never even gave a thought to, so it may be the skys the limit, or at least until the bank runs out

The following tidbit is from Kodak's website which has quite a bit of info about film storage:

"For long term storage, stack the films horizontally, rather than on edge, to minimize physical distortion. But don't stack them more than six or eight cans high because they're heavy and the bottom ones will be difficult to remove."

Some of the 16mm cans I use are the plastic archival type with small ventilation slots. While I like these cans they seem like they may "flex" a bit if stacked too high due to the accumulated weight. Six to eight cans sounds about right--and this allows access to the bottom reels without having to
move too big a stack.

Vidar's shelving is very similar to the steel shelves which I use for my 16mm features.

And my own at the lock up for storing the equipment on.
The ones for the films are thick moulded plastic but the ones opposite look identical to these of Vidar's here and are fairly strong to be able to carry the weight of all of the equipment.

I found them to be a bit of pain to assemble given their simplistic interlocking design but once they are fully built c/w with chipboard shelves inserted, they are very strong it has to be said.
Must be used only in very dry environments however. Certainly not recommended for a garden shed.

I also have similar shelves. I use them for my 35mm features. They can carry over a ton each
