New 8mm prints from the uk ?

#1 by Paul Browning , Thu Mar 04, 2021 2:20 pm

Just read this on Ged's facebook page. Apparently someone has the means to print super 8 features and print them down in Bucks, after buying secondhand equipment. It is only a rumour at the moment, but as they say " no smoke without fire ", lets hope .....................

It sounds very good but the costs would be very high and i would imagine getting rights to release titles wouldnt be that easy. Good though.

It's fine buying the equipment, but do they have the knowledge to use it? Printing of any kind can be problamatic, getting the right chemicals, let alone the film stock to be used, but if someone has got the urge (and the money!) to have a go I do applaud them, as Andec in Germany has got a Monopoly right now, and it would be good for the buisness to have some competition!

I agree Barry, reading through some old magazines where Dereck Simmonds explains some of the problems and costs involved does make you wonder what the cost of a print would be as it would have to build in profits to keep it going. What stocks are available and would the sound stripe need to be done in Italy.
It is great that someone may be going to have a go with this but i personally think with the cost of brand new prints, most people would be extremely limited to the amount they could afford. I think around £60-£70 for a 200 footer?

Let's hope the rumours are true and the equipment was bought to use not just to look at, also they may know what they have and how to use it. There can't be many opportunities to pick up such equipment these days, it would be nice to have releases once again in the UK, Mark

I believe it was all a joke. There was a question asked by another person: "Don't believe you, Dave. Who is this mystery man?"

The answer: "hope to find out tomorrow"
And then: "a nigerian prince from Ibadan who made money out of selling tankers filled with oil. many are still sailing round the atlantic looking for a buyer "

So I think it was just a joke.
