#1 by Greg Perry , Tue Jun 05, 2018 4:49 pm

Hello,

Please see survey above:

I am wondering how many of us have a detailed film inventory, and what is used....thank you!

That's great that other people do it too. I thought I was the only nutter. I also make a record on my spreadsheet which projector I played each film on last.

i try to remember what i have got and where I put it.Unfortunately I sometimes forget and then I find a film that I have not seen for some while.
Useing a computer to keep lists of things has never appealed to me at all.

Collectorz is fantastic. It has things other databases don’t have. I have added colour condition, reel sizes and such and you can just search up the film title, it adds loads of info automatically

But sure is nice to find a film almost instantly. I do regular backups and should be able to get it back quite quickly in case of crash. And as mentioned, a lot of info. So easy to find which films I have with Bronson, Chaplin or whatever

Well worth the price

Although I like doing things the old fashioned way, I use the computer to keep track. I'm at the age that I need a little help with remembering things. :-)

I will have to look at the "collectorz" software. My answer was 'home-made spreadsheet", but only some of my films are entered. Other titles are listed in notebook & pen/paper, and some titles not entered anywhere---yet.
I am thinking a printed out list of some type with details of color, stock, condition, estimated value/purchase cost, etc. would be very helpful for our family members in the event we aren't around and they have to sell off the films. I know my wife has little idea what a few of the titles are worth...and I don't really want her to know till after I am gone.....haha!

All that can be entered, value, where it was bought. You can download a free trial (50 entries or so?)

It do cost some but most adaptable software I’ve seen

When I first got into the hobby, and had about 10 silent titles, I decided I needed a catalogue, and I bought an exercise book and recorded all the details by hand, title, sound/silent, number of reels, date of film. As there was no internet, I had to search books for the films original release date; and lastly, that the film had been lubricated. After we had a change of furniture, I was unable to find my book. It may still be in the house, but I have searched several times, with no luck. Since then I have gone into 16mm. I just rely on my memory, though after reading this, I may well get around to making a new catalogue on the computer.

Answer no. 6.
I have used Microsoft Works Database for years. Various different listings for each film gauge. I have over 3000 films and it's the only way to keep up with what I've got.
It can re-arrange the various headings into any order as selected. Normally kept in alphabetical order.

Good grief Maurice! 3000? If you watched one a day it would take over 8 years to see them all!

i use a very simple excel spreadsheet, several columns, the title, (A to Z order), The number and size of the spools its on, the date last cleaned, then a column for each date viewed. The far right box is comments for things like condition/ slight fade/ any lines or scratches etc, when i view any films it takes just a few seconds to update it. I have an accountant at work who is a master on excel, he was able to make it in a way the the columns can be moved and hidden so it isn't a mile wide, i fill the "date viewed" in a different colour for each year. 2017 was light blue this year its a purple colour so i can see at a glance what has been viewed or cleaned for years.
It started as a bit of fun but is now an invaluable database. Goodness knows how Maurice keeps 3000 movies in order. What a collection.
Here is the sad part, every year we remove every film we have off the shelves to spring clean the shelf's of any dust, then one by one we stock check the entire collection using a printed list of all 570 super s plus the 16s. The last time i did this there was a couple of films i had not added to the list. 2017 was an exceptional year of purchases for us.

at this time 168 people have viewed this but only 10 or so have ticked a box, if you look could you not at least take part? it takes two seconds.

Yep, like Tom said--an anonymous survey is a quick and super easy way to contribute to the forum!

We are hopeful that more and more members will feel free to make a post or reply to a topic now.
The days of being made to feel stupid or inadequate for making a post are behind us.

People here are cheerful and well-mannered and it is a lot more pleasant as a result.
Give it a try!

Mine sit on the shelf and in drawers. Before I make a purchase, I look over and go, nope, don't have that one. That's about as organized as it gets for me.😉

I use Collectorz. Great database. I still have loads of films to register, but the most important part of the collection is there now ( 300'+ titles ).

The cost for the database is well spent money, if you can avoid to by titles you already have, but have forgotten

Collectorz, com doesn't seem to be able to let you specify what gauge of film you have. I just had a look on-line and it appears to be for users of DVDs and similar, not "real" film. Am I wrong?

Mats,
So although the page, https://www.collectorz.com/movie shows DVD's, it sounds like you and Vidar have been able to easily make it work for
real film in multiple formats such as Super 8, 16mm, 35mm and yet also take advantage of the downloadable movie details from the Collectorz film database....

Sounds like it has some nice features, I hope it is easy to use as well. I will be looking into this more as time permits.

You are correct Greg. You can download the free version ( 50 films limit )and customise it. If you like it you just have to pay and add as many films you want
