The Reel Image Spring 2018 & Blackhawk Films' Catalogs

#1 by Greg Perry , Fri May 11, 2018 4:51 am

Hello,

I just received the Spring 2018 issue of "The Reel Image" issued by Steve Osborne. There were several interesting articles--including one by Martin Dew about the Eumig Museum (Part I). Dino Everett also wrote an article about David Shepherd of Blackhawk Films and the numerous catalogs that have been scanned and are now freely available online.
Here is the link for the Blackhawk catalogs: http://uschefnerarchive.com/blackhawk-films-catalogs/

There are over 380 catalogs/sales bulletins totaling more than 16,000 pages!

Truly amazing how many films were available through Blackhawk over the years.....

I shall enjoy looking through the Blackhawk catalogues. The only thing I didn't like about Blackhawk was that they replaced the titles, same as Walton films did over here.

All of the issue's seem to run about 24-26 pages. For those who haven't seen a copy first hand, this is a small format publication, about 8.5" by 5.5" in size. It is in full-color with pictures and graphics and appears to be a home-based publishing effort put out by Steve Osborne and his wife Natalie. I think it is published three times a year, $14.99/yr for the USA and UK, everywhere else just $19.99/yr.
It really is a great little mag for the dedicated film fan, and it is a treat to open the mailbox and, amidst the bills and junk mail, find the latest issue awaiting!

The Reel Image was originally called Coming Atteactions, which goes back to the 1980's. Those original issues are available as scanned files on a CD from Steve. I was a subscriber way back in 1987-1990. Natalie is Steve's daughter who helps Steve with the publication. The cartoons in the publication currently are created by me. It's my contribution to the magazine.

Thanks for the additional background info and correcting me regarding Natalie Osborne.
I hope you won't mind that I post one of your great cartoons here for the rest to see! If you would prefer that it be removed, please let me know and I will do so....thank you and have a great weekend!

The cartoon reminded me of a cartoon in, I think, Amateur Cine World, many years ago (many more than I can really imagine). The scene was as follows:-
Two people in a living room. At one end of the room is a projector on a stand and at the other end is a tripod screen. The projector is running as indicated by its light beam. The beam radiates from the lens for a few feet and then gently does a 90 degree curve and illuminates the floor.
One person says to the other:-
"The volts are low tonight".

I’ve been a subscriber since the early 1980s during the “Coming Attractions” years. Experience is that The Reel Image is actually closer to twice a year, as opposed to three times a year.
