RE: Choosing a title

I remember fondly the window shopping, awaiting my salary for the paper route, almost running to town to buy. Choosing was often difficult, but it was good and fun process. Birthdays, Christmas was the same, buying and wishing for films

Mats know these, as it is his words, Those were the days

Hi Vidar; I'm pretty certain mine is a sepia print, which makes me wonder if it was on colour stock; I need to check that. If my memory is correct, L&H made 'The Second 100 Years', where they had their hair shaved off. Hal Roach decided to put them into another film while they were waiting for their hair to grow. In this film, Max Davidson buy a house next to a lunatic asylum, in which L&H are two of the inmates. The house is badly built. I remember that Max Davidson placed a spirit level on the floor and it slid across the room. Then they turn on the gas oven, only to get a shower of water, then while smoking a cigar, he turn on the tap and gets a stream of fire.

I have one or two sepia L&H films. When silver prices skyrocketed, colour film became cheaper than B/W. I´m not very happy with these prints. In my opinion a B/W shall remain B/W, as they were originally produced. (The only exception are films that were originally tinted)

Hi Mats; the other films I bought at the same time were B&W. I discovered a couple of years ago that some L&H prints I bought were on colour stock and turned red. This was one of the reasons I stopped buying film, as I only bought B&W movies.

As far as I know Blackhawk never used colour stock for B/W films. I believe that my sepia print(s), were made in UK

I'll check my prints when I have time, at the present my wife is not well, so I'm having to look after her. I know the ones that went red were bought from Perry's Movies when they had a shop. They were in unmarked white boxes. It will be interesting to see if there is any info on the leader. I will get back to this post when everything gets back to normal.

I´m not shure, but I believe, that I have one print, sold by Derann, on colour stock. I can ask Ged Jones if they printed on colour stock.

I'm not sure who released my Beau Hunks, maybe it will say on the leader as it's in plain boxes, must be nearly 10 years since it was projected.

Robert, hope your wife gets well soon,Mark

Panayotis Eddie Sammons, the owner of Regent also wrote a booklet full of 8mm two reeler reviews (see Picture Gallery),in 1980 and from 1981 to 1986 issued 15 issues of Home Screen Scene, a magazine full of 8mm reviews, all written by himself, for the rarities that he imported

Eddie Sammons didn't own Regent back then. He did have his own called Mirage Films. The gent who owned Regent was called Les Sydall and I think the shop manager was called Gordon Hasty?

Have a few of those review magazines good reading.

Wonder if Eddie bought them out when Les retired.

I still love the smell of film in the morning

Blackhawk did splice colour stock for colored scenes in old silents, at least in the standard 8 days.Beside PHANTOM I have two or three Melies. Of course all have turned red byu now! The more recently colorized GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY,in super 8 was on color stock.

I am Eddie Sammons. I was not the owner of Regent Films. The business I ran was, for private purposes, in my wife's name and was called Mirage Films 8mm.

That small business was the main importer of products from Film Office, Discofilms and Franfilmdis (France), Top Films (Holland), Piccolo Films and Geyer-Werke (W.Germany); JEF, Red Fox, Canterbury and Spilker (U.S.A.) plus many other small companies from Europe.

For my sins, I was the author, as you have pointed out, of Two Reeler Review and the 15 issues of Home Screen Scene as well as being a reviewer for Super 8 Collector.

The two publications I did were hard work. I actually viewed every film, typed up the reviews, set up the format and handed it over to the late Keith Perry who organised the printing. I did all the postal distribution and that included return of films which dealers had kindly let me have to review.

The publications didn't make me a fortune but I had the satisfaction of knowing that copies reached diverse areas of Europe plus America and Hong Kong and Japan.

Its all a long time aga now (just had my 84th birthday!) but I am still intested in films and still write about them. Some works have even been published.

I am amazed that there is still so much Super 8 film around albeit second-hand. It's nostaglia, I know, but I still miss those conventions which were hard work but fun and full of enthusiastic collectors..

That's it. Best wished from mainly-sunny Spain.
