Proper lubricant for metal shaft/bearings

#1 by Thomas Peters , Sun Feb 19, 2023 5:40 pm

Would anyone know the proper lubricant for the metal shaft/bearings on projectors? For example, the shaft that holds the rubber wheel that contacts the shutter on Elmos.

Would 3-in-1 oil be ok? I know that any kind of grease would probably gum it up. I have a silent projector where the rubber wheel/pulley heats up considerably after a minute or two, causing the projector to slow down.

Thanks

This is one of those subjects thats has many different answers, I myself still have a fair amount of Elmo red oil which is obviously the right one for my machines, but I also have used super lube which seems to do the job,

I also understand many collectors find that sewing machine oil is also good for this use.
Hope this helps.

Hello,

Super Lube Oil is very good. (Note: There is also Super Lube Grease which I use for projector gears). Another good option for things like projector roller shafts is Supco CE441 Zoom Spout Oiler. It has a built-in extendable spout to allow easier access for hard to reach areas.

Zoom Spout Oiler is a paraffin base, non-gumming, high quality lubricating oil.
Features/Benefits:
Withstands high temperatures without breaking down
Viscosity: 92-99 @ 140°F

Thanks again. My projector is running very well after applying the lube to the shaft.
