Finally got myself som roller goo

#1 by Eivind Mork , Mon Sep 20, 2021 2:14 pm

I got a new Elmo 16 CL projector last summer. I did a quick check before I ran any films, but I should have done a better one. I now realized it does indeed have gooey rollers. It wasn't obvious as the top of the rollers look good. The goo came from the center of the roller, got pressed out of the side and then hit the film at the sprocket holes.

So that put the projector to a quick halt. The good news is that new, almost unused, rollers are on its way from a good friend! It is now located at Keflavik, Iceland, for a short stop on its way. So I hope to get it up and running again soon.

This hobby truly is an emotional roller coaster :-)

Glad you got spares, have you got a spare for the spare? I dont know these machines all that well but those rollers do seem a problem.

I think the newer rollers is not going to be gooey ever, not same material if I understood correctly … I need to find my new ones, everything is a mess and should be located in some box somewhere :-)

Urbanski Film in America supply a 4-roller kit for US $110, plus a deposit of US $90.
The deposit will be returned when the removed old worn rollers are sent to them.

An interesting video. But what about those circlips. A lot of patience is obviously required.

I got mine from R C S CLASSICS in the USA. I have mag/opti version so needed one extra roller. They are made from polyurethane now so they are pretty much indestructible will not turn to mush. They are bit awkward to fit but they make it worth while, i also changed the takeup arm for the geared type. The elmo cl has a brake roller to help the lower loop former and this has to set up correctly, also when replacing the roller set, be careful not to trap the last plastic guide at the very back of the machine with the cover, i did this and didn't realise it for while, until i noticed it when running a feature and sitting close to the machine. I have now done the front and rear spool tensions as the rear one was allowing the film to sag half way through, so this was must do really. They keep you on your toes sometimes, but worth while when you sit and watch your favourite film with out interruption ........

Haha Eivind! 'ROLLER' coaster! 😄 But seriously, maybe you could post a tutorial with photos here when you replace them.

These rollers are from Urbanski, and barely used. The tracking says it has reached Norway now, so any day now I will have them :-)

Yes Vidar that's the man. He was recommended to me by Kevin Clark, because he had elmo original spares, although looking at the rollers from urbanski they look to be from the same source. I found getting the take up and rewind tensions of special importance on these machines if you don't want sagging film either end, i used a spring weight to do this and found the rewind to be out by some margin, check yours if you see any saggy film take up, and check the magnetic clutch on the rewind is working too as this was not working on mine, even though it had been fully serviced before i bought it ...........
