The Sting 2x400 and City Heat 3x600 optical

#1 by Mark Mander , Sun Feb 07, 2021 11:09 am

Last week I had a conversation with the wife and discovered that she'd never seen The Sting, as the super 8 version is a pretty good cutdown I thought we could change that, colours still pretty good which always helps, sound is a stereo rerecord so sounds great, it was followed by the optical sound feature City Heat, colours still good and sound is very good and clear, I didn't take any screenshots but just sat and enjoyed the company and films, Mark

I''ll have to watch it if it comes up on TV. I like these type of films, bank heists, scams, etc.

Mark,

Ive got both copies too and apart from an emulsion scratch on one of the reels of city heat the colour is excellent and its so good to see Eastwood and Reynolds together as well as the great Madeline Kahn.

I agree David it's a fun film and Burt and Clint worked well together, Richard Roundtree too, the super 8 prints are nice quality and the sound is nice and clear, the two films together are set in similar era's so worked well, Mark.

Love THE STING digest. One of my all-time favorite movies.

I've seen CITY HEAT exactly once -- when it was first released to theaters. I don't remember much about it except that opening scene where Reynolds was seriously hurt in real life. (They used to show that scene all the time in the trailers and TV spots.) I do remember that my friends and I were horribly disappointed and didn't enjoy the film at all.

Finally bought a copy of The Sting last year amd it was OK. Had City Heat from Derann and quite enjoyed watching it. The Sting was also available for hire on super 8mm from Rank Film Library I seem to recall it cost £25 to hire. They were really stunning prints much better than most that were available for sale at the time.

I still love the smell of film in the morning

I wonder if there's any of those features lurking about.
I've never watched City heat but must look out for it on the shinny disc or TV. Well done on finding these.
Are the colours ok on them?

I recently got my 2nd copy of the 2x400 foot THE STING -- came in a lot of other films. It is completely faded. It barely has any red -- looks more like sepia. My print I bought in 1979 still has above-average color -- I never took any special care in storing it across 2 different houses -- although I keep all films in the basement. Perhaps since it never gets very warm? I never bought much in color in the 70s but while some have held up others have not -- though never nearly as bad as the recent copy of THE STING.
