Ads of the 60s. Derann 200ft colour sound.

#1 by Tom Photiou , Sun May 24, 2020 8:42 pm

As you know Derann released many advert reels but this is one of our favourite reels. Ads of the 60s, it's full of colour and variety and of course included the ice lolly adverts incorporating the characters of the Thunderbird's with Lady Penelope promoting Zoom ice lollys. The reel is full of 60s nostalgia with ads for Lyons Ice Cream, Cornish Ice cream from Walls, butterkist popcorn, Pepsi Cola, the classic animated deer Babycham ad, several local shops including Reeves Audio and Photographic centre which show a 16mm projector. Within the reel is the opening P & M advertising opening and also the closing logo followed by a couple of "Merry Christmas" messages from the cinemas management, and then followed by the "The Management wish you a Gay and Exciting New Year". This was before the word Gay was hijacked by a certain group.
Quality is first class with excellent colours and very good sound. This is clearly a low fade print thankfully as i have seen a few of these have now turned red or are fading.

What a great item to have; I remember the Thunderbirds lolly advert; also Butterkist, when I went to the cinema. P&M?, do you mean Pearl & Dean?

Hi Tom,

I have this also on both Super 8 and 16mm (as Derann also issued this on 16mm low fade of course). I love this reel and have spliced this with Derann's Pick N Mix which has more 60's ads most in colour including a Dora Bryan one, makes an excellent 400ft reel. I think Derann labelled this as 'Flavour of the Month' because of all the ice cream ads contained within it. When you turn off the lights and start the projector you could almost imagine you are in a real cinema in the 60's, it's so good watching it. One I will never part with.

Derann claim they sold hundreds of copies of this but you rarely see this for sale.

P.S: I've never seen a faded copy, were they Derann originally or another company ?

Tom and Graham,
What a fun reel of ads to have! I agree that adding something as nice as this to the front of a feature really enhances the home viewing experience...

Thanks Graham and Greg.
I think it was only Derann that released it. Perhaps Barry mey be able to correct me. Like you Graham, this is one we wont part with. The colours are so vivid as well and the whole look and sound of every advert really does take you back. Flavour of the month !! Thats the title i was trying to remember. I will look at the box later to see if its on there and will load it to Eivind for the database.

I could be wrong but I think this Derann 200ft was only released in the Low Fade era and hence all the prints I've seen all have stunning colour like my own. There was however old advert reels of say short extracts like the thunderbirds zoom lolly ones and similar that crop up from time to time that may be released from other companies and these maybe faded. I know CHC released a few old cinema ads on their 'Classic Nostalgia' reels as I have a few of these but these are all recent prints. Like you say maybe Barry can fill us in on the history of this reel.

I do like these old 'Cinema' ads and thankfully Super 8 is blessed with many of them with the numerous ads from Kia Ora and Lyons Maid etc. and hardly any can be found on DVD.

If you want more like this look for Derann's Pic N Mix and Intermisstion Time and CHC 'Classic Nostalgia' reels.

Graham S

I also like the part where it says have a Merry Christmas 1964. You could almost imagine the people leaving the cinema on a dark cold winters night waiting at a bus stop outside to get home to a cold flat at 11pm.

I think you may be right there because the red image i saw was that of the thunderbird ad. I believe this advert was on another release.
The guards cig advert certainly give no clue.At first it lloks like an ad for London tourism. You see the palace guards marching and bagpipes being played for ages and then up comes the image of the pack af "guard" cigerettes. One of our favourites is the classic take on zulu on ad reel 10 for silk cut. We also have the other one for silk cut which is a spin off of the great escape, funny but not a patch on the zulu spoof.
This 60s advert reel is up there at the top for both content and quality.

Graham, As it happens, someone on ebay has a 50ft spool advertising "Thunderbird adverts + extras".
This is interesting in that they are fading so they must have been taken off another advert reel which also contained these adverts. It's a shame that they are fading but thank goodness we have the Derann low faders.

Don't forget DCR Films who released a few ad reels. Was trying to think what companies released ads Derann of course and DCR who I've just mentioned. Perry's Movies did some mainly I think for Senior Service, Dune Films did some on 50 ft spools. I think the first ad I bought was from Derann on a 50ft spool for St Bruno pipe tobacco. Filmed on an oil tanker.

I still love the smell of film in the morning

David,

On Eivind Mork's super8database there are a total of 49 films with the 'adverts' tag. Please note this is not a complete list, only what we have been able to add so far.
Many are Derann, but there are some also from CHC, Dune and D.C.R.(as you mentioned), and also from Movieland International Ltd.

This link will take you to the multi-page list of 'Adverts':
https://super8database.com/?q=tag:Adverts&page=1

If you have details on any others, we would be glad to add them to the database as well...

Just going back to P+M advertising, they used to show this opener and closer at The Regal in Henley-on-Thames in the early 1970s before Pearl & Dean took over the ad sales. I used to find the clinking glockenspiel noise quite mystical! I also used to see it in cinemas in Leicester Square.

The P+M top and tails are also included on the 'Flavour of the Month' ad reel from Derann. I have Derann 'Ads of the 60s', but sadly it's incomplete.

This one and number 10 are two of the best ad reels Derann released. Our number 10 is good but has a slight up and down movement, trying to find another has proven quite difficult.
There all great to look at and they bring back lots of memories and generally, the quality of the prints is outstanding. It was such a pity Derann ended when they did as they seemed to release one of these every year or two.

That was good timing. Please let us know how it is. That zulu spin off is really funny. The reels worth it for that one advert. There was a similar one on another ad reel we have which was a spin off of the great escape, its good but the zulu ad is the best by far.

I forgot to reply to this, Tom.

Cinema Ads #10 is fantastic and the reel I bought has excellent colour and the original box. Zulu Silk Cut is superb.

Don't you just love non-PC ads in our puritanical wokist age?
