Cleaning Film

#1 by Colin Fish , Tue Jul 16, 2019 3:09 pm

I'vs been cleaning film using filmguard and cut up segments of white all cotton t shirts. The results have been good using minimal filmguard sprayed on the fabric and held between the fingers through the reminder. However, I have run out of t shirts! Is there a cheaper alternative to buying more white cotton t shirts or can I use say cotton bedsheets cut up. I do wash the fabric but my wife is not that keen on the filmguard rags going in the washing machine. Can anyone recommend an alternative?

Try asking Steve Osborne of The Reel Image, the clothshe sell is very good, I think they were okay reasonable. Pack of 40 and Iusethem several times, as they can be folded, so use on three areas on each fold, meaning around 18 cleans a cloth

I bought mine from Urbanski in the US. They work very well.

I go into the optician shops in Henley and ask if they can spare silk lens cleaning cloths, and they usually give me two or three at a time! There's a couple of stores that always have new ones for giveaway.

I cut them into roughly 2cm x 2cm squares for cleaning and wiping excess, disposing of when dirty. I particularly like lens cloths because they are extremely fine weave, completely non abrasive, and absorbent.

How about these? They seem cheap enough for what you get.

Socks. Clean, used and worn out cotten socks. They are great for holding cleaner and gentle on film just don't press hard on the film, let it slide over them evenly.

I used old well washed flannelette cotton bed sheets. Cut into long strips about 2" wide they are great for the ECCO machine I use.

I still love the smell of film in the morning
