The McMasters. 600ft Iver Film Services.

#1 by Tom Photiou , Mon Mar 26, 2018 10:01 pm

Here is a western that will not be to everyone's taste, but as we buy our films for us thats irrelevant.
This was a release from Iver originally supplied as a double album on 2 x 400ft reels and it fits perfectly onto one 600ft spool.
As a cut down it is average, one or two cuts are a bit sloppy but this edit retains the story fairly well. The sound is good and the image is ever so slightly soft, not as bad as MGM's but not as good as other Iver releases if you get my drift? The main cast is made up of Burl Ives, Brock Peters, Nancy Kwan, David Carradine and one of my favourite actors, Jack Palance, this guy always plays a great baddie.
The print itself is in very good condition and has no fade at all so i assume this to be an Agfa print which is just as well as much of the film is in dark settings. All in all a rare film with plenty of action, but not one for the PC sado brigade.
The plot,
Benjie (Brock Peters) is a former slave who returns from fighting for the North after the Civil War. He returns to the ranch of his former owner Neal McMasters (Burl Ives), who is grateful for Benjie's return.
White Feather (David Carradine) is the Indian leader befriended by the sympathetic Benjie. The Indians agree to help out on the ranch, and White Feather expresses his gratitude by giving his sister Robin (Nancy Kwan) to Benjie. The prejudice of the townsfolk increases.
Kolby (Jack Palance) is the former Confederate who tries to buy the ranch from Neal. When he refuses the offer, Kolby leads an attack of renegades on the ranch. Surrounded on all sides by irate gunmen, White Feather mobilizes his braves to rescue the beleaguered duo in this excellent cutdown from Iver Film services.

Looks sensational still Tom. One of the best I've seen from Iver films this time around.

Andy, i have to say i really was expecting this one to have either faded to red or at least have brown tones, i was gob-smacked that its as good today as when we bought it around 30 odd years ago. These Iver films are hit and miss on colours, our Dark Feature is also like new with no fade.

I'd like to see that one too here Tom when you have time.

I was really surprised to see this film looking so well still. Your climate and care systems clearly does them the world of good Tom.

I noticed Hugh had a similar knack with prints that you hardly ever see looking well nowadays.
His could often look like new including the colour even on Eastman stock etc.

I think it was quite a good seller due to it being so difficult to find on any other medium at the time. The TV companies dont seen to like showing it as it may offend. I find this quite tiresome, if theirs something on the telly that i dont like or find offensive i simply switch channels. I think Jack Palance films are always entertaining, he a great baddie and does sometimes, (not always) over do the acting but i think this makes him quite unique.
Its a bit like Jack Nicholson, a lot of people thought he overacted in the Shinning, but i really liked it, could you think of a better person to have played that role?

Definitely not Tom - although the film of the Shining has grown on me over time - I read the book first and that is genuinely scary - but I really like the film now. I'll put my print of the Mcmasters on over my Easter Hols and I'll also screen my latest 16mm prints that i've yet to screen.

Tom Photiou sais Thank You!
