Dunkirk.

#1 by Gwyn Morgan , Wed Aug 30, 2017 8:08 pm

Today went back to work to arrange for .....hopefully if all the equipment still works, been silent for some while (digi rules) ..to make up a 35 mm print of Dunkirk. The film programmer at the Plymouth Arts Centre has programmed the first two weeks of opening after a summer break with Dunkirk and another film.Dunkirk will be shown primarily in its digital package but also if all works out a showing in its 35mm format.Yes in deepest Devon there could well be a showing of Dunkirk on film.
Anyway today I made up the film which came on five reels, and it is a scope version.
I ran a few feet hence the couple of pics, but at the moment the sound is not perfect so some TLC is going to be needed.
I will advise on here of any confirmed screenings once I know more, but for now this might bring back a few memories

Sorry the pics were taken in a hurry on my iPhone, but once I get a better chance will add more.

Gwyn lovely to hear mention of the Plymouth Arts Centre. I remember when it was a tiny little place in between Bretonside bus station and the Barbican. Saw a few 16mm prints there, the most recent was Malcolm X which was over 20 years ago, I wonder if that was 16mm? What was most definitely 16mm was the print of The Great Rock n Roll Swindle which was a very worn print, very splice - not ideal for a film featuring mostly punk rock numbers!

Spent this morning doing a run through of the whole film.Went through a dream just me and the machine, just like the good old days.
The film will be showing tomorrow night at 8.30pm so if you are in Plymouth you might still be able to get tickets. This will be the only 35mm show it has been decided.(nothing to do with me l would run it every night).
Below are some more pics.

Vidar,if you lived a little closer I would get you in but I'm afraid you will have to make do with my pics, sorry.
Del, I have seen this film quite a few times now and I think it is very good, the actors Branagh,Rylance,Hardy and co do not overshadow the vastness of the whole episode.I do think the cinematography is very good especially the shots of the spitfires, and the vast expanse shots.Thankfully there is not a lot of talking the story speaks for itself as it unfolds.
The other point I like about this film is its accessability for younger people being a 12A has meant younger people will see it.
I would like obviously to have seen it in 70mm but I'm not complaining.I sat through a run through of the 35mm print and if I had not known that it was film it was not any a great difference from the digi one.I would not debate the pros and cons of film vs digi its all a personal thing, but I am very grateful to have been able to show a near pristine 35mm print.
Perhaps as ODEON was Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation maybe it should now be NEON......Nolan E O N.
I look forward to Nolans next picture ,I hope its in 35mm!!!!!!!
