Columbia Features

I often wonder why the features that Columbia released were never available in the UK. Cat Balue was one, Emmanuelle , On The Waterfront, Bye Bye Birdy. I think they were more. The only one I bought was Emmanuelle with was the full feature, while not up to the standards of the later releases it was still quite good.

Big company, small volume of sales syndrome no doubt David.
Large corporations like Columbia, I doubt would have been even remotely interested from the amount of prints they would have envisaged selling and therefore any profit they stood to gain from them.

The digests sold in huge numbers as they were affordable to the masses so these are obviously a different kettle of fish.

In this same context the airline companies in the late 60's 70's and 80's brought us all many Super 8mm prints that we would otherwise never had stood a chance of seeing on 8mm.
They provided a customer base both big enough and wealthy enough to make the Super 8mm Optical Features a worthwhile proposition to the big film companies.

I still have the Columbia release of "A Touch Of Class" feature and nearly had "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb", but was ripped of
by a conman in Baltimore.

These were magnetic sound prints and were advertised in Movie Maker magazine here in the UK. It was Jeff Films who had them. My print came on 5 400ft reels with the Columbia name on them. At least I think they were genuine prints.

Yes, Jeff Aikman probably had them later Dave, but they were in Columbia's catalogue at the time of the digest revolution, the 400'
which would be '75 when the collector was deluged in stuff from Columbia and Ken plus many more.

Hugh. Do you have a catalogue from back then? Wish I had know some of those features were about.
