Die Schlangengrube Und Das Pendel

Screened a little favourite of mine last night, a little seen fable from West Germany shot in and around the medieval town of
Rothenberg, also used in other films including "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". A tale of an evil Count who was executed for slaying twelve virgins, rises from the dead to claim the thirteenth that will give him immortality, Ghostly coach rides through corpse strewn trees, subterranean castles, tortures including a pit & pendulum sequence keep the story moving at a brisk pace. The print is 16mm Agfa stock.
Also known as "The Blood Demon" & "Torture Chamber of Dr Sadism" 1967.

Great Screenshots Hugh, looks like Lex Barker there. Was the film originally in German, or is this a German print?.

Yes its a German film, the first Gothic horror made in colour since WW2. The print was expensive and is in German, I imported it a couple of years ago, it holds the record on delivery, bought on a Sunday, delivered on Tuesday morning! If I had a mag track, I'd redub, it holds sync very well with the video. I can't complain though, I have Mountain Films versions 4x400 in both gauges, col & B/W, plus the German versions from Piccolo in col & B/W 2x400s. The colour versions from Piccolo are on Agfa too and are stunning, interesting that on the
DVD, the 2x400s are shown as an extra and are faded prints! I missed out on a 16mm English dub from the USA, my first ebay bid on a film, the print was faded, there was also a print for hire in the UK, from a 16mm hire firm, but only in B/W. It's been a favourite of mine
since first seen on std 8mm, a thoroughly entertaining fable, but then Germany is the land of Fairy tales. It starred Chris Lee, Lex Barker
and Karin Dor.
