DERANN'S STANDARD 8MM FEATURE "PSYCHO"

#1 by Hugh Thompson Scott ( deleted ) , Tue Aug 11, 2015 9:22 pm

A purchase from years ago was DFS print of "PSYCHO", this was the print that was taken directly from a 35mm interneg to std 8
( regular 8 ) positive prints. This was done by Henderson's lab that had a machine to do just that, in theory the end result would
be the same quality as 35mm. Well not quite, but the print is very good, far better than the later 16mm interneg that was used.
I was fortunate that Derann had stopped selling prints of this particular title, as their lease had expired, so placing an ad in
the magazine "Movie Maker", yielded the print I have today, much viewed, much loved and fortune smiled on me when the seller
told me he was selling, as the music frightened his children, no doubt grown up with children of their own now.
I have some screenshots of this film, as soon as I master how to upload, I'll put them up.

Hi Hugh
You are very lucky to own that "classic" Standard 8mm sound feature film release. I always coveted a print but have had to settle for Derann's
200 feet edition on Standard 8mm sound. I also have the Castle films 200 feet edition and the Universal 8 400 feet version.

I think I read that Henderson Labs was destroyed in a blaze.

This is one great fright flick! I'd be happy just to get a digest of this one. It's highly sought after by us collectors! If I remember the story correctly, my grandfather took some of his kids (including my mother) to see this when it was first released to theaters back in 1960. I think my mother said that she hid behind the seats in fear (LOL)!

I am happy to own the 400' digest. It's quite good. Saw the feature on eBay about 2 years ago, not seen it since

I hadn't realised that Hendersons' had been damaged by fire, what a shame, they must have printed miles of film in the day just for Derek Simmonds. I have seen a std 8mm feature on ebay a couple of years ago, going for silly money.

You know what, this is another one of those films we turned down a few years ago and I have no idea why

I almost bid on it, but think it was too much for me. Money, if only one had a plenty

I had a digest, but sold it. I´m not a fan of digests. I love to have the complete feature.

A complete standard 8 feature is fine for me. As long as it is reel fiilm. Any format. I just love the reel feeling

Many years ago, while at one of the Blackpool conventions, I came across another copy of "Psycho" on a table run by some German lads,
I misread the label, thinking it to be "Psycho 2 ", I duly bought it, realised my faux pas and thought no more about it, it was the second
version Derann did from the 16mm interneg, which was slightly brighter with a bit more grain. It was when I was in conversation with my
little "oppo", the late Harry Nadler, he expressed a need for a print, Harry was one of the organisers of "The Manchester Fantastic Film Festival", publisher of a great fantasy mag and one time owner of his own film hire company, I duly wrapped up this spare print and sent it gratis, Harry had done me a few favours, when received I got a phone call and he was chuffed to bits, I still miss the little chap, one of the last conversations I had was when Antonio Margheriti was a guest at one of his Festivals, the great Italian Film Director, I couldn't
attend, but asked him to obtain the great mans autograph, which he said he would, next thing I knew, Harry was gone, about the same time as Derek left us. Gone but not forgotten.

Yes, looks superb. I regret not buying one about 2 1/2 years ago. Thought it was too expensive, but I think it was not that expensive anymore. Do scream out if you ever want to sell :-)

.....and another few. Sadly, after these pics were taken, my little S709 gave up the ghost, it went out on a high, bought in 1971,
it has only ever been serviced twice, fitted with a double claw and using a 20mm prime lens, I'll try to resurrect it.

Those are great screenshots of the Standard 8mm print of Psycho. It looks to be in excellent condition for its age.
I am now regretting even more than ever turning down a past chance of buying a print.
What the hell was I thinking of at the time ?

I always thought to myself that some old Standard 8 prints were better than super 8, and these 'Psycho' screen shots prove it, my 'Stagecoach' standard 8 reel is good and some Collectors Club standard 8's are better than their super 8's. I would love to get a print of 'Psycho' on Standard 8.
