Casino Royale (2006) with Daniel Craig

#1 by Greg Perry , Sat Sep 23, 2023 7:05 pm

I just received this print from Steve Osborne. It is on a 400 ft. reel, in widescreen format, and with a mono soundtrack.

This packs a punch and is fantastic! It starts with the opening credits in color and then switches to black and white as Bond recounts his first two kills. The 'double 0' designation requires two kills. The first kill is a bathroom brawl and is full of action. The second one shows Bond snuffing a 'mole' within the agency. We then return to full color where Bond is tracking a bomb maker, Mollaka. Mollaka is soon on the run from Bond and the rest of the film gives us a blisteringly-fast chase scene.

The color is brilliant, and the sound is great. The picture is very sharp. The sequence is so fast that it is difficult to get good images of the fights and the chase itself. Of course, we can assume this is from a digital source.
I have a few other of the Bond digests and some trailers as well, and I will be watching this one many times--it is that good!

Per Steve, this has been a popular title, and in fact, Steve had to re-order another batch to fulfill demand.
Here are some pics:

Looks a good one, very sharp and as you say, like all the Bonds, full of action. Its good to hear that Steves had to order a second batch, a perfect show opener.

Just received my copy and have to say it's fantastic.

Beautifully sharp and the colour is excellent. Very strong blues when you need them and the facial tones look spot on. Very stable picture as well as you get on these new prints nowadays. More of a digest than an extract as there is lots of dialogue before all the action and full closing credits with the bond theme. Possibly a bit boring the credits after all the action but makes the film seem like a mini movie in itself. Sound is also clear. Rip roaring action when the chase scene begins, fantastic to have on Super 8.

Running time 22.05 mins nearly full 400ft reel

Greg
My copy has the B/W scenes first then all colour with the titles and the rest. Unless mine is different could the super8 database be corrected.

As an idea for future releases, perhaps rather than have full end credits, just use dissolves between the end titles and fade out the music in a similar way to Derann, this way you would be able to use the extra two or three minutes for extra footage.

Graham,

Thank you for pointing out my error. You are correct the opening scenes recounting the first two kills are in B&W, and then it switches to full color for the balance.

Paul,

Cost was $239 plus shipping.

Tom,

I like your idea of an extra few minutes of action, but at the same time, I have always enjoyed the theme songs from the Bond films too, so I personally wouldn't make the trade for a bit more action....

At the end of the day it is a decent running time, reminds me of the old jumbo giants but even longer.

Great reel but for me it's just price that stops me buying these days, I do have a few Bond openers but to get just the first few minutes for basically £200 is a bit much for me, no scope or stereo either which the earlier releases were, your paying more for less these days, hats off to those that do buy and of course to those involved in producing them ,Mark

Out of curiosity, as I understand it, it is no longer Alberto doing the stripe and records, who actually supplies the sound stripe now and are the recording done at source of print producer?

Hi Tom,

I have no idea as to the manufacturer of the sound stripe and what company applies it.

However regarding recording, my understanding is that all prints coming from the 3 main sources in the US are recorded by Adam Deierling and all prints from Dorun films in the UK are recorded by Dorun films using in house recording equipment.

Cheers Graham, I'd definatly be interested to know the sound stripe source as I thought it was only Alberto who manufactured it, but clearly that changed with some of the recent releases. my only interest is purely curiosity due to the problems of it coming off as in the case of some of Deranns features, it appears to be a big guarded secret as to where its made and how it's applied.

Tom the new single soundstripe seems like laminate tape and not paste which could be newly manufactured or old stock. What Alberto uses is paste but not sure if he also made laminate stripe but not used it. In any case this new stripe seems to be holding but we will only know in about 20 years + if it's good. CHC used to use a laminate stripe for years on their acetate prints and most of those are still good with no problems as I have many. I did have one film from CHC late on which had peeling stripe from the start but this got replaced and was a batch problem that got sorted I believe. Most of their prints are still fine to this day. I've also never noticed any magnetic dust in the projector heads.

You're right it does seem to be a closely guarded secret. Have you ever thought of sending an email to Andec themselves? They will either reply or they wont.

Was this released recently? Where are these new releases announced? Is subscribing to a hard copy of Steve Osborne's publication the only way to know about these, including those from Dave's Films? Steve's site doesn't list any of these new releases for sale.

A google search of "Casino Royale" "Super 8" doesn't reveal much except this thread, and a mention of it in the Super 8 database and a recent thread (with no info other than it will be shown somewhere in he U.K.) on the other channel. Other refs are for the older releases of the 1967 film.

People talk about these new release barely breaking even money-wise, but maybe more people would pre-order if they knew about them.

Thanks

Greg, what about getting Steve on here? Or if he tells you about new releases and you announce them here?

Wenn Sie hier auf Links zu eBay klicken und einen Kauf tätigen, kann dies dazu führen, dass diese Website eine Provision erhält.

Just to set expectations -- the likelihood of me buying one of these new releases at $300 is low -- but it would be still nice to know about them. I just don't feel "plugged-in", and apparently these aren't advertised online. I find that strange in the 21st century, particularly since that's the main way to advertise now, and Steve does have a website where he sells stuff. Strange that these don't get much press on the 8mm forums unless there is controversy over people flipping them on eBay.
