Short Silent Gothic Film on 16mm

#1 by Don Cunningham , Thu Oct 11, 2018 2:43 pm

I thought I would share it here since you all share my love of celluloid. I just launched my first ever crowdfunding campaign for my second film which will be shot on 16mm B&W. Due to the cost of shooting on film (something I will not change for this project!) I launched my first crowdfunding campaign; this is a project near and dear to my heart, so I want to make it happen especially with landmark anniversaries of my film heroes occurring in 2019. https://igg.me/at/CastleOfBaronFinch/x/15280591

If you know of anyone that may be interested, please share.

Thank you,
Don

About a month left of my campaign, but I shared this "2nd unit" super 8 footage on the film's Facebook page today.

My local newspaper conducted an over-the-phone interview with me last week about my project. Not expecting anything to come from it, was I surprised when I made it to the front page on Thanksgiving Day!

I was able to secure a state historical site for a day of shooting, well at least 300 feet for one short scene. A 3 hour drive to the location, 3 hours blocking, shooting, re-shooting, then 3 hours to drive home. Feeling sore today due to the action sequence, but it felt like a good shoot. Just need to send the spools out for processing! 16mm B&W reversal.

My 300 feet of processed 16mm came back into my hands yesterday from the lab. I spliced them together and watched the footage on the projector with my wife and kids. It turned out better than I imagined; I impressed myself! So, off to another entity for scanning so I can edit a grant application sample. These are some low quality phone pics I took while on the rewinds.

Thank you. I enjoy being able to use the splicer for more than my collection. I'll post better images once the film is returned to me once again.

At the beginning of September I applied for a film grant with the goal to get funds for finishing the film. While I was rejected last year, this year's application from me was completely revised AND I submitted actual 16mm footage complete with score. Here is an early, and highly compressed, edit I made. The version the review committee has is much more refined and cleaner. Even though it is cost-prohibitive, I am sticking with film. This is only from a single day of shooting and there is plenty more to do! Score by Norwegian composer Andreu Jacob.

Should I receive the grant (NOT keeping my hopes up), I have a graphic artist ready to create the intertitles with era specific typeset.

I appreciate it. It is a fun project for all of those involved. Everyone is fascinated by watching me work with actual film (especially people visiting the location when we were shooting the brief scene). I'm trying to honor early cinema by making this how those film makers did. It seemed to work so far.

I received the grant denial in December, so I am churning out what I can as I can. I just had three rolls of stock processed of footage from July-November. Two rolls were of a family vacation I took but used the locations for some exterior shots, and the last roll was of the September 13 Harvest Moon. For not being processed immediately, I thought it came out quite well. Here are some snippets for anyone interested.

Hello all. I hope that all of you are holding up with the current worldwide situation and make the most of it somehow. Luckily some film labs are still open by accepting mail, so I shot a test roll of older 16mm black and white negative stock (double perf to boot) that was gifted to me by a dear friend for this project. I figured I may as well shoot potential footage for the movie, if it comes out, good. If not, then I didn't lose anything much. A brief "edit"...

After delays, Halloween morning saw the first proper shooting of the short. More to complete, but my co-lead is busy on other projects (he recently had a guest role on Magnum PI), so hopefully we can get the filming done at the beginning of 2022. The third cast member lives closer and met up with me for some takes. #3 son enjoyed being camera operator and learning the craft of working with actual film.

Tuesday was a good mail call as I received the processed film from the October 31 shoot. I used two different cameras, each had their own lens/lenses, and some takes were shot with both at the same time (kind of like the 1925 Phantom of the Opera). Going through the footage I found a particular take that stuck out to me. The angle and given lighting were unplanned, but are a nice surprise.

Film still lives! Kodak has officially supported my project by providing me with 30% of my film needs/order pro-bono. It has been a long time in talks with a regional representative, but this was a much needed boost in confidence.

HOPEFULLY, the weekend of the 15th will see the filming of the finale...then to shoot the remaining scenes.

That is great news Don, to have Kodaks support is a hell of an achievement in itself. Well done on that.
