A Pictorial History of Horror Movies

#1 by Tim Duncan , Sat May 26, 2018 4:12 pm

This is the only film related book that I have at the moment. And I have my doubts there has been one any better compiled on the subject of horror films. This book covers everything qimaginable released from the silent era up until about 1970. The book was written by Denis Gifford and copyrighted in 1973. This just happened to be a 'suggestion' from eBay based on my search history of vintage horror movies in the 8mm format. There are photos galore throuout the book, and plenty of reading too. It is 216 pages, bound in a hardcover with a cool dust jacket that I'm doing my best to preserve with plastic. Just flipping through the book, I recognize MANY characters from the world of 8mm/super 8mm collecting. I am going to include photos from the inside of the book shortly. As I am using my phone, it may take a little time. This was purchased for less than $10, including shipping costs which was a bargain!

Denis Gifford was well known in the UK, he was also a collector of vintage comics. I'm sure anything written by him is very thorough.

Tim, I remember seeing that book advertised in Famous Monsters magazine growing up. I wanted it so badly, but my meager allowance wasn't enough. Congrats on scoring a copy at such a great price. 👍👍😊

Remember seeing this book at my neighborhood Kmart in the early 1970s. I think I read most of that book when I was in the store over multiple visits!

That copy is in great condition. In a couple of months time I hope to be visiting a lady who is a relative of the late Ingrid Pitt; she works as a psychic/medium.

I find the next photo humorous, as the cat is helping me to hold down the page for photographing. :-)

A great book for any fan of that genre; thank you for posting Tim, it's much appreciated. I like the picture of your cat helping out.

I have to watch the cat closely Robert! She likes to play with film if it's left lying around, or if I'm spooling up the projector! Those are the times I have to shoo her off! :-)

Could it be a Tom & Jerry film with Jerry in the frames she is spotting? ;-)

Dennis also did the 8mm reviews in Movie Maker magazine till about 1973. There's a book I think called Armchair Odeon's with the reviews too.

Back in the 1970s some nice film books were published. Octopus books did the Movie Treasury series. Crime, Horror Western some great stills in them.

I still love the smell of film in the morning
