A lifetime in film

#1 by Robert Crewdson , Fri May 25, 2018 1:20 pm

Films are in the blood. My parents and grandparents were regular cinema goers. In the 1940s my parents went to the cinema every week, and saw 'Samson and Delilah' 5 times before it moved to another town. My mother had a large collection of postcard sized photos of all the greats, and as a kid I used to frequently look at them; unfortunately, she didn't look after them, and they got creased, marked, and eventually thrown away. She did have 3 film annuals, which I also regularly looked through, and hoped that one day, I could have all three. Eventually, she gave my elder sister one, and I got the other two. The dustjacket is a bit tatty now, but this is one of them. My next thread will be an article from this annual, which will compliment my review of 'The Red Beret'.

That book looks like an interesting read Robert! Does it contain a lot of photographs as well?

Yes it does Tim; lots of those old annuals contain stories about the making of certain films, behind the scenes stories, and full page photos of the stars in either B&W or Colour. Did you have similar in the US?

Any object like that is so nice to have when it has a history to it! Like, I got my parent's old screen for their projector (they have a new one). I truly love to own that. It instantly give me the feeling of they of watching film just by picking it up.

I think it contains behind the scenes in the making of 'The Cruel Sea', if that is on interest, as it was put out in Super 8.

I have never come across any books like that Robert. Those are excellent reference books. I wonder if there are complete collections of those out there somewhere? But this thread makes we want to do one on a book that I have. :-)

Here are my two early film annuals; they were obtained for me by my father when I was at primary school (5 -11 years); one had the spine missing already. My interest goes right back to when I was three years old and saw 'The Ten Commandments'.

By the way Robert, I'm sure "The Ten Commandments" was quite an experience for you as a young boy.

It was Tim, and although I was only about three or four at the time, I remember a lot of it like it was yesterday; who could forget the parting of the Red Sea, or the Commandments being burned into the tablets of stone, and the burning bush. It's all fresh in my mind.

Look out for "Speed's Film Review" which was issued annually and contained the year's releases.

My Film Review is 1946 not 1949 as I thought.

True indeed, Tim :-) Not much beats a 200' Disney classic for me :-) But I am very happy that not all share my interest. The prices would be terrible if we all liked the same.

The magazines look great! Just like the films itself, they represent their time and it is fascinating to read.

I deliberately chose that page as I know there are several Disney collectors here.
