Doug's Box Creations

#1 by Tim Duncan , Tue May 22, 2018 3:24 pm

I had two 400' reels that needed a proper box. So I talked to Doug on the phone one day, and asked him to make these for me. I have seen his work and KNOW how good it is. I love the choice of poster art he selected for them. The boxes themselves came from Steve Osborne. Doug has a way of making these perfectly, as well as durable. Now, I have cool looking boxes to show off the digests. Thank you Doug!

Hi Tim,
Do the box lids lift off from the top, or is it the kind that is more like an "envelope" where you slide the film reel in?

Either way, these look great--and I like the easy-to-read label on the spine of the box...

Hi Greg!

These are acid free, heavy cardboard, with removable lids, just like the old Ken Films (for example) boxes. They are really nice for replacing missing or heavily damaged original boxes. I think Steve Osborne sells them in 200', as well as 400' sizes (?). Doug cuts the edges of the photos absolutely straight. He uses a multi-step process to apply a protective finish to the artwork and for applying it to the boxes. :-)

Those look really good. I also make nice boxes for my films without proper boxes. I like my film shelves to look nice and neat! Is that The Car digest the scope version? I have it in scope but it is faded, there is some color left though. I love that movie! I have a home made box for mine too but yours looks much better!

Hi Bill!

This digest of "The Car" is the flat (?) version, where it's cropped to fit a suare viewing area. My screen is an old, but hardly used, silver screen (the pull down kind on a tripod stand). Incidentally, "Airport '77" is widescreen, with black bars at the top and bottom. No special lens is needed, but it does make the picture smaller on my old projection screen.

Sure thing Vidar 😊. Steve is having his annual Memorial Day Film show this weekend. A number of folks who attend Cinevent tend to pop by for this event as well.

The Boxes look superb! Very well done, Doug! I especiialy liked the cover for "The Car" :-)

Wish I had boxes like that to the ones without cover. Too bad it must be shipped from the US as I guess it will cost quite a bit.

Hi Doug,
It would be fun to see a few pics from Steve's film show--if that is ok with Steve etc.
Agree with Vidar, Steve Osborne is far and away the best film dealer around!

Thank you, Eivind. I enjoy making them as so many digest boxes have not held up over the years. Seems like the clamshell ones get really beat up around the edges.

Hi Greg,
My wife is the official photographer in our family, so I'll ask here to take a few that I'll post here. Forum member Michael Lavato will be there too (we both live in Ohio.)

These boxes look great, much more sturdy than the flimsy ones on ebay. I dont half wish i bought a lot more of the white ones Derann use to have.
I also enjoy making up the covers etc, here are a few of our examples, these get printed out to cover the size of the box to a max of 600ft. Larger reels are made up of several images .
