Cinevent 2018

#1 by Michael Lattavo , Mon May 21, 2018 6:28 pm

Thought it might be a good idea to start a new thread. Sorry to hear John Hourigan will be unable to attend - maybe next year!

I will definitely post some pictures. I leave this Thursday, will reach Columbus around lunchtime (I only live 2 hours away). Greg, I will ask some of my 35mm friends in Columbus what they would recommend to use to clean your reflector - I would guess 50/50 distilled water and ammonia or vinegar, but will double-check.

This year is Cinevent's 50th year, and looks to be a pretty good lineup in the screening room. And, a bunch of guys from CineSea attend as well, which is always fun.

Anyone else on this forum planning to attend? Would be great to meet in person!

A little too far away for me :-) But would love to hear what you experienced there!

I was hoping to attend this year Michael, but family (and my own) health matters played havoc on any long distance traveling. Hopefully I can next year. I am hoping to make it to Steve Osborne's Memorial Day Weekend film show.

I hope to make it to Cinevent next year, too — always a great time perusing the dealer tables.

Had a great time, was worn out by the time I got home! Watched a lot of films, including the entire Masked Marvel serial. Spent Sat afternoon at Steve Osbornes, which was a great outing. Steve showed a gorgeous super 8 digest (naturally now I can't think of the title, think it was something like Dancing in the Movies? Hopefully Bill Phelps can help me out with this one).

Watched films in the main screening room, as well as the Monster Bash room - which was left open for people to run shorts after hours!

I took a bunch of photos, will try to go through them in the next day or so and get some posted. There was a lot of paper for sale at the show, those guys are nuttier than we are!

Yes, my experience is that those folk at Cinevent REALLY take it uber seriously. I’ll never forget when I saw a man there, well into his 70s, having an impassioned — and I do mean impassioned — argument regarding how the second season of Roger Ramjet was superior to the first season (!). Honestly, it kind of freaked me out, and I had to keep telling myself, “Don’t worry, you DO have other interests, John .... 😀”

Glad you had a great time! Maybe next year for me ....

The film at Steve's was THAT'S DANCING and it was the last reel of the feature with the trailer put on the beginning. It was edited in a way to screen as a nice digest with the more modern era of musicals. It was very cool. It was good seeing you Michael! I did not take any pictures while I was there....I never do...always just hang out and forget to!

Mike,
Great pics! Is that Leonard Maltin in the blue shirt? I had heard he was scheduled to attend.
Looks like plenty of great film/movie stuff beyond just celluloid there too...
Hope you found some film gems there to add to your collection....
Thanks for posting these and the Steve Osborne pics!

Looks like a great event, Michael. Were the film posters for sale as well; they looked very desirable.

There were tons of posters for sale - way more paper than film. I didn't buy much, mainly some shorts and soundies - just enjoyed watching films and hanging out.

Yes,that is Leonard Maltin. My first ever writing for a film magazine was a letter in his wonderful FILM FAN MONTHLY. I also helped with various information for his book THE DISNEY FILMS, and my name is among those thanked in the prologue, (but disappeared in the various later editions !!!!)
