#1 by Barry Attwood , Sun May 13, 2018 9:57 pm

I'm currently experiencing some difficulties with my land line, so if you need to contact me at all please either email me at indi8films@aol.com or my mobile on 07906539453. I'll let everyone know once the land line has been sorted.

Well I've managed to contact my line provider Talk Talk and they have found a difinite fault on my line, it should be fixed within 72 hours so hopefully by Wed/Thu it should be up and running again, as a temporary fix all my calls are being diverted to my mobile, so anyone who wants to contact me can now use my landline number or my mobile number I listed above.

Kevin's advice regarding your issues Barry, is great advice.
I'd consider changing your provider based on my own experiences with that company.

I am with BT.
They are the ones who own and maintain the systems. Most other providers do have their own equipment in telephone exchanges.
The BT help-line is a free call and they are always most helpful should any problem arise with my phone and fibre internet connection.

I stick with Virgin. They rob you with a greater disrespect of conscious than Dick Turpin ever did, but just like Ronseal, they do what it says on the tin.

Sometimes you just have to pay through the nose to get what you want in life.

I haven't missed a City match in almost 20 years of being with them.
That in itself is priceless!

Well we started off being be AOL which was bought out in the UK by Talk Talk, up to now I've had no problems, and as it's a fault either in the street or at the exchange, until it's fixed, I've not a lot else to do or say, so we'll see how quickly it's done in the 72 hour period I was given.

Hoping for the best, and that it takes less than 72 hours.

Another phone call later and I've got a date for the BT Engineers coming in, it's next Tuesday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., so at least it should be fixed after that (I'm crossing my fingers here!).

I wonder how an error takes so many days to fix. Glad to hear you got a date for the fix, at least!

Well finally my phone line has been repaired, so at least you mcan call me direct, but there's still a fault somewhere as my broadband speed is awful, we've now got a Talk Talk engineer coming out on Saturday.

Just had a nice Talk Talk lady engineer come to look at my internet (or lack of it!), it seems there is still a fault on my main line coming into the property, so now it's back to BT, oh joy!

My speed (what you can call it!) is ranging from 0.4 down to as low as 0.1 mbps, a year ago I was getting nearly 3 mbps, so no catch up tv for me for a while, as it needs a minimum of 2 mbps. At least the phone is working, and I can get emails (for now!), but it's a bloody nuisance all around.

Barry,

This whole experience of yours is like a bad dream! I hope the "TalkTalk" and BT people are exchanging information directly so it doesn't turn into a finger-pointing where one group is saying "It's not us it's them" and vice versa....
... best of luck to you!

I know what you mean Greg, I don't know where to turn, I even asked about changing to a fibre line, but she said to me that the fibre info is still carried into the property on the BT owned line, so until that is fixed, even this option is out of the question. But as I went without a landline for nearly 2 weeks, at least I can now conduct some kind of business, as when the phone was dead I could not process any Card transactions.

Barry' my first internet connection was dial up, which came down the BT line. Now I have fibre, which is buried underground, and the phone comes with it. The BT line is redundant.
If you change to fibre you can keep your phone number if you want.

This is roughly how ADLS and fibre works.

Your copper line with the dial tone comes from the exchange to the green cabinet. The line is then jumpered to the fibre cabinet (usually close) and the broadband then gets put into a format for the metallic cable and then comes back into the main cabinet to your premises. When I said copper it could also be aluminium cable. My old joke when I worked there 'Copper access network with some crap ali cable.'

diagram.png - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte) In this image you should also have a metallic cable from the exchange and two cabinets.

Is your telephone off a pole outside or from the underground direct?

Have a look at any cables on your property and inside. Do you use filters? or a main socket with the filter built in.

Openreach have Fibre to the cabinet, fibre to the kerb and fibre to the customer. The first one still needs copper cable. Run some speed tests and go on a compare site you might get a better speed from someone else.

David,

My line comes in directly from the street, and I use a filter for broadband, but I'm sure the problem is outside in the street somewhere, as the line has slowly been going slower over the last year, so I suppose it will be good old BT's domain.

My parents had much of the same problems. It turned out to be a combination of factors, but the most important one was a punctured cable where moisture got in. Got worse over time. Good luck with the rest. Glad you are able to communicate again.

Underground telephone and electricity cables, particularly old ones, can be prone to ingress of damp if possibly damaged in some way.

Finally my Broadband woes are over (I'm crossing my fingers typing this!), I had a brilliant BT Open Reach broadband engineer who came this morning and sorted every thing out, I've gone from 0.4 - 0.8 mbps to around 3.4 mbps, and what a difference it is already. He said to me if you can get a deal to go to fibre, go for it, as the speeds and reliability are much better. Talk Talk are phoning me sometime tomorrow, so I'll see what they say, but at least 3.4 mbps is OK for now.

My package with Virgin is £48.25 a month and includes unlimited downloads up to 100 Mbps.

I've just done a deal with my broadband provider Talk Talk, I'm getting fibre with an estimated 40 mbps speed, all UK calls included (plus a new high speed router), and it works out £4 a month more, so long gone are the days of programs buffering, it should all be up and running by June 22nd, I can't wait, now to watch some of the world cup in 4K via the BBC iplayer, yea!

Great news, Barry. Don't sit too long in front of your television/computer, I'm sure you've got new prints to check out.
