So then just out of interest....

So then given we were on the subjective topic of discussing aesthetics in our machines,...what are our members favourites purely from a "looks" standpoint and what is it in particular you really like regarding each of them in the aesthetics department?

Any age, any gauge.

Oh, difficult ... I kinda like the GS-1200, but the Fumeos look perhaps cooler. GS looks perhaps more plastic. Beaulieu also has something

Think Fumeo would be the winner for beauty (probably performance too)

Having spoken at great length to people who have owned all three of the "big three" on Super 8mm only, from a performance perspective only at least, your ultimate choice is an unusual one Vidar.
I exclude the 9145 given its so few actual owners.

It's fair to say however, it would be right up there in most people's estimations on the all important care in film handling department.

Anyhow back to just aesthetics....

I may be oldfashioned, but I find the Art Deco projectors, from the 30´s and 40´s most attractive. Many brands had similar design. I have some in my Collection, both 8 and 16mm

The S940/38 would be up high on my list also Tom.

I will post my own top 10 including photographs of each and a description as to why I feel they look superb in each case, right at the very end.

Mats has just highlighted, that just like our choices in beautiful women, our perceived beauty of our machinery differs vastly.
It's great that as human beings we are all so very different don't you think?

In 1965 I fell in love. I had found the projector of my dreams. It was the Eumig Mark S. Standard 8 mm With SOUND. I was eleven years old and the pricetag was about £100. An enormous sum. I started collecting and in 1969 I finally bought one. Not the Mark S, but the two format Mark S 709. It still works, but I use it for standard 8 only. Not the most beautyful design, but they were workhorses.

I love my fumeo 9119 but for durability & excellent sound and pic and also because they are no where near as heavy as the fumeo - I love my Pair of Eumig 824 Sonomatics.

For sheer Sexy Beast looking projectors...it would have to be the Beaulieu and the Elmo GS1200 for me. And I hate to say it..but in that order.
I just love the look of the Beaulieu...even when I had my GS. It just seemed to be designed so well from an aesthetic viewpoint. And I really like the look of the Studio model with the LED meters.

I know it's 16mm. but the Debrie D16 has to be my favourite in the looks department. I have two of these.

The base must be very heavy. With all the weight going forward I wonder how it doesn't tip over?

The Debrie is a very, very, heavy projector.

my only head scratch to Alan's point in post #15, is why he hates to say it! 😂😂

The Debrie looks like a bigger brother of the one Mats displayed earlier Maurice.
No doubt it has enormous suction cups on the back feet Alan to keep it glued to that projection table!

S938/940 and Sankyo Stereo 800 win on aesthetics for me. Both look like they could sit alongside high end stereo equipment even to this day.

I think the GS-1200 looks a bit clunky by comparison, but I'd love to own one for its performance.

The Eumig people told me last week that all their projectors started as an external design, and then the engineers tried to fit the machinery and electronics. Then the cycling backwards and forwards would start, and compromises made, but it always started with the design.

The 938/40 I completely agree Martin. For the Sankyo 800, it's a modern styled fine looking machine for sure, but just somewhat a little generic to my eyes personally.

For me, the true award winners for their aesthetics also incorporate a mixer desk with sliders and V.U. meters etc etc.
These are the models that truly transitioned well into the 80's with their sleek modern day looks as well as being almost future proof for their ergonomics.

Still to this day nearly all styled in this manner, don't look dated even in this era now.

The piano keys on the GS and the soft touch buttons on such models as the SD Auto are equally a sleek modern day nice looking feature that others could have fashioned simirlarly, but ironically it is these features and their micro switches which are also prone to reliability issues from an engineering design standpoint.

So from a looks and looks alone perspective,as well as an ergonomic perspective it has to be said, it's understandable why they were chosen, from an engineering design aspect, it's understandable why sometimes they were not always chosen over more traditional rotary knob and cam shaft / electrical contacts methods of arriving at the same outcome.

The same can still be witnessed to this day regarding modern day washing machine designs etc etc.
More often than not, many Bosch washing machines still utilizes the rotary manual main control knob as a preferred method of control / selection.

If anything, I find sliders more dated-looking.

I'm not acknowledging ergonomics at all here, just what looks good sitting on a shelf. I actually think the Sankyo possibly has the edge over the Eumig 900s for pure aesthetics. The spools and LED VU metres looked so cool, and their 800ft spools were ahead of their time. Now, if Sankyo just could have made those panels out of brushed aluminium too...

A mixer desk is still designed in this very same manner to this day Martin.
Sliders are still considered to be one of the best methods to allow us to control audio inputs etc.

The LED's on the Sankyo 800 are a nice feature though.
Still to this day, I just love the whole 70's and 80's appeal of a good old fashioned V.U. analogue meter.

It's probably just a reflection of the impressionable age I was at when these things were prevalent. I still love old AA Class amplifiers styling of this era to this day.
The ones with the twin V.U. meters cooly illuminated in various shades of blue, yellow and green.
