A Question About Projection Screens

#1 by Tim Duncan ( deleted ) , Sat Jan 28, 2017 7:29 pm

I don't think this has been asked here. What is the difference between a projection screen that has a white facing/surface as opposed to one with a silver facing/surface? Is one better than the other? I have been looking at vintage projection screens that were made around the time that my machines were.

I think 3D is best on silver

Silver screens were very popular around the advent of LCD projection as they bring about a better contrast ratio.

Back then, these type of projectors had a very low contrast ratio inherent by design
I've never subscribed to them though myself.
The glass beaded ones I did have once but deeply regretted it a year or so later.

Pure brilliant matt white for me these days, every day of the week.

Yes, silver screens will often show a 'hotspot' where the corresponding angle of incidence to the projector meets the viewer. They are also prone to 'frosting' where whites tend to sparkle like snow. Neither is desirable. Stick to white, as Andrew says.

I have wondered about that for a long time. I have heard the same about 3D and LCD before, but my brother bought a silver screen in the 80s for his slide projector, so it was used before too. But I would believe it was back then also to get better reflection for light rooms etc. But I have wondered about the whites when you use it.

Yes Eivind I can remember Boots here in the UK high street's used to sell them in the 70's even!

Even then, the boast was to gain a more reflective surface and deeper blacks from the higher contrast gained from these.

All of which is true but very much at the expense of brightness and vibrancy of colour which are always THE most important factors to me at least, when watching a film

I guess this is much of the same effect as with silver which is darker but still reflective. It can't be black and not reflective at all, otherwise I can't see how it could work.

I have contacted the company to hear prices in Norway

Would never thought a black screen would give a picture like that

Buy a bunch of black pens and give it a try on your white screen ;-)
